So.... first impressions... the lens /camera combo is going to be a blast. I still need to MA all the gear... use a tripod /monopod... and practice my manual focus.... oh... and shoot some decent subjects.
But... I can say right now out of the box.. with a dead battery... I have a huge smile on my face.
GOOD TIMES!

Cool shots! Love that bbq shot - amazingly clear detail. This is why I am still on the fence about a 5DS R. My Otus 55, Zeiss 135, and 11-24mm are three lenses practically begging to be matched with a high resolution sensor for captures with stunning clarity and detail. I am leaning towards going with an a7R II, but this thread is yanking me back hard to considering 5DS R (nice job to all those posting images here! ).
I expected the 5DS and 5DS R to produce excellent images, but even these test shots are looking impressive. Regardless of my final decision, which may be several weeks away, this is going to be a thoroughly enjoyable thread to follow.

I can't tell you which direction to go... but.. with your glass.... I can't argue the "R" or "S" would be an amazing combo.
best of luck with your decision... no matter the direction... you have some great options for sure.

Here is a little different type of test shot using the 5DS. Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
This is a crop of about 33% of the full frame. Three Canon 600 EX-RT flashes were used at 1/16 power. Flashes were wirelessly triggered from the camera which was on a tripod. 500mm F4 II and 1.4x III used. Original 8 bit file was 144 MB in Photoshop. Raw conversion done in Capture One. Cropped file was 49 MB before it was down sized for posting here. Click on the photo so it fits on your screen if it is larger than your screen.
Settings were made to get appropriately exposed photo while trying to freeze wing movement using flashes set in manual mode. Looks like it will be an interesting Hummingbird season with this camera
Thanks Hatch. One thing I have noticed is that after looking at a few shots I have taken full size in Photoshop, since receiving the camera yesterday, it is a little of a let down after they are downsized to web posting jpeg size and don't have quite the same impact At least on my 27 inch NEC monitor. I think subject matter has something to do with it, as well as jpeg downsizing methods.
Wondering if false color could get into those feathers. Obviously with the 5DS less potential. I think bokeh on these cameras is going to be creamy at these resolutions.

Much Respect Andy... Nice flash and camera work.

Thanks Karl. That is one reason I got the S instead of the R version. I was originally going to try the R and see if it would be a problem but then I saw a review sites studio test image which had feathers in it and with the R version there was a lot more moiré. And since the S was available I decided to go with the S. I enjoy photographing birds but also landscapes and sometimes scenes with houses or buildings in them. If comparison reviews start popping up that show a large difference I hope they do in the next few weeks!

I also see this and have for the last several years. Viewing on a good large monitor at higher res versus web size, much is lost. This will put pressure on forums to increase posting size. I already post 1600 wide in some places.
