imaging-resource was at the presser and were checking comments on their website during their live blog and they replied to my inquiry regarding any changes to the compression, which was one of my main concerns from the a7r - unfortunately, Sony confirmed that the files will be the same: lossy compression.
i know there has been too much discussion on this topic over the past year(s) already, but i really wish Sony would at least address this publicly (i.e. why they don't offer a lossless compression option).
The 'why' has been speculated to be due to the design of their processors; their 'lossy' compression is quick, relatively effective, and efficient from a power-use perspective. And it's baked in.
But the fact that there isn't a 'lossless compression' or 'uncompressed' option for those that could make use of the cleaner files is irksome.
"Sony says the on-sensor phase-detection AF can be used with A-mount lenses using the simpler LA-E3 adapter, rather than the LA-E4 that had an SLT mechanism built in. At the press launch in New York we even got a glimpse of the a7R II autofocusing Canon EF lenses using a Metabones electronic adapter. Focus appeared to be faster than on a native Canon body, and the AF experience itself didn't appear to be limited simply because you're using a third party lens (full coverage and tracking are available)."

Wait, it is stating that Canon lenses focus faster via metabones adapter than they do mounted on a native Canon camera That's too good to be true, isn't it?
2 comments. Yikes on the weight, but I guess there is only so much reduction in weight you can do. Second is that I'm glad I stuck to my guns with Sony and didn't touch that Samsung. 8K FF BSI was quite unexpected. Gotta wonder if that rumored 59mp sensor is for the A9 and if it will also be a BSI sensor.

It is, but it may not be a good thing- wear and tear? Battery usage? Accuracy? Etc.

Depends on if they are using liveview focusing and what body. In any case, this is great news.
I guess I'm one of the few that finds the initial price a bit silly at almost 1K over the model it's replacing at introduction. This price is what I expected the "Pro" E-mount model to go for - and this is not it (you can be assured there will be a model above this one, A9 (or whatever it is to be called).

I'm assuming they mean that the Sony/Metabones combo focuses faster than a Canon using on-sensor phase-detection AF in live-view.

Would be nice if Sony could deliver on the uncompressed raw. This would shut a lot of people up. And figure out a way to allow us to use some combination of buttons to switch from auto evf -> eye piece only instead of having to press up down, left right up down right left (or whatever the hell it is).
Looks like significant gains in every direction in a very versatile camera. The sensor will be the star. Total carry weights with FE lenses will satisfy almost everyone soon. Silence, high resolution, stability, durable shutter, small form factor. I trust they ramped up the production line capacity. Especially if AF works very well for off-brand lens users.
That's quite an announcement. Very glad to see a whole pile of new technologies here, and am especially curious about the continuous autofocus for 3rd party lenses, and how well they managed to fix the shudder... errrr, shutter noise/vibration.
You might try shooting an EM1 if you want to stick with m43, as its EVF (or the EM5 II) is much better than the EM5s.
Yes they are! I've tried the EM-1 and EM-5 Mk II and the viewfinders are great but I do want to add a FF mirrorless to my kit simply because I've got around 8 or 9 (maybe more?) legacy lenses I want to use
This looks great, if I can find the funds or wait for a while till the price drops a bit.
