I just performed this mod again and it was easier than the first time. I tested it around the neighborhood and can get sharp images starting at f/2.8 even off-axis. For even more crispness, I like stepping down to f/3.2.
It's like having a 35/2 + 25/2.8 lens with very nice rendering. Here are a couple quick samples from today:

BTW: These were JPEGs out for the camera. The EXIF will say 35mm but it was 25mm using the Sony WA converter. (SEL075UWC)

So @Fred Miranda, you’re still liking this in 2018? Have an RX1R again and thinking about adding this.

Thanks,

I have Guy’s (modified) adapter. It works fabulously on the RX1. It is simply unusable for me on the RX1R II. If anyone is interested, please drop me a PM.

I'm not sure I would get this again. It works great as a 24mm f/4 option if you really care about IQ. (f/3.2 usable)
Only at f/4, it matches the quality of the native RX1RII wide open and I'm talking about the center. The edges never really look great even stopped way down. CA and distortion gets worse and AF only works in AF-C. (Not as accurate as the lens naked though)
It also makes the compact RX1RII very bulky and front-heavy.
I would say that the RX1RII + your other body + Samyang 24/2.8 would perhaps be a better wide angle option. However, if the RX1RII is the only camera you own, this WA converter could be very useful.

I've tried the Ricoh GW-3 and the results were much worse than with the Sony adapter. Perhaps my GW-3 was not optimum though.

For those interested, I ended up selling my RX1rii to fund my A9. So now I'll selling my Wide Angle Converter and Fisheye Converter. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1559066

I am was happy with the converters while I owned them. The WA was used 20 to 30% of the time with my RX1r2. The FE I'd use for unique fun situations. Like Fred mentioned, I'd still recommend the conversion if the RX1 is your primary camera.

Trijicon1,

This is a great post and I would love to add the wide angle capability to my RX1Rii camera, since it is my primary camera. I find myself oftentimes stitching photos together post via Photoshop when trying to take interior shots of small spaces in buildings, which I do a lot of. Unfortunately, I’m unable to see the original photos you posted with the tutorial, which show the process along with your description. I’m afraid of trying this mod on my own based only on your written portion without the visual guides. Could you repost those process photos? Also, I thought that maybe since this post is so old that maybe a better solution for getting wide angle on this camera has come about? I’m all ears, if anybody has another suggestion.

p.6 #12 · RX1/RX1II/RX1III + Sony WA converter (SEL075UWC)

I wanted to resurrect this post now that folks are traveling again post-COVID. I just spent 10 days on a family vacation in Amsterdam, Bruges, and Paris. I brought a load of gear, including my A7S, 28-70, 28mm/f2, 6D, 17-40L, and most importantly, my RX1 and 075 wide angle converter (unmodified).

I used the RX1 for 98 percent of my photos, and only took the A7S out for an hour to do some video work. For the canals of Amsterdam and Bruges, I used the RX1 by itself (with a pocketful of batteries). However, in Paris, I used the RX1 with the converter quite often (stored in my shorts pocket when not in use), especially to photograph the stained glass of Sainte Chapelle or the interiors of the Versailles Palace, which were more cramped than the art museums. I held the UNMODIFIED converter right up flat to the RX1 lens. It worked perfectly, as I was getting completely sharp shots about 75% of the time in all focus area modes, including face detection. Things were tack sharp by f5.6, and often at f4.

I was trying to convince myself each day to take the 6d or the A7s, but in the end, the size and weight of the RX1 simply won out, and honestly, the IQ with the converter still won out compared to the other lenses. Even the 28mm f2 on the A7s just didn’t sing to me like the RX1, and was slightly heavier and definitely bulkier.

So, I’m totally convinced to only travel to Europe as light as possible with the RX1 and the 075UWC WITH OR WITHOUT THE MODIFICATION. Sure there were times I would have preferred a bit wider, but those times were rare, and I plan to stitch a few shots and even took a few panoramas on the RX1.

I repeated the mod and tested it again. Sharpness is excellent in the center at f/3.2, and by f/5 the corners are already performing optimally. (Same settings apply to the FE 28/2, which Sony limits to f/2.8 for this reason.) For landscapes or street, I'd stop down to f/5.6 or f/8, where image quality is strong using the SEL075UWC adapter. With the adapter, you basically get a 25mm f/3.2 lens.

Fo those interested this also works on the new RX1R III since it uses the same lenses. I've tested on my RX1R and RX1R II.

Here is a picture of the final result:

It's cloudy here, but I managed to take some sample shots with the SEL075UWC adapter. As I mentioned before, it's extremely sharp at 25mm f/3.5 (still very good at f/3.2, similar to wide open without the wide angle adapter) and delivers excellent sharpness across the frame starting at f/5.0. It also performs beautifully at close distances, even in macro.

Still nice blur at the f/3.2 and f/3.5 settings.

Anyone have the older pics from Trijicon showing the after and process pics of this mod? I'm curious how much metal needs to be removed.
