Regarding analytic or holistic approaches to image quality. I use camera A and make some large nice prints of images from it. If I want a little bit more of X in my prints, and a little bit less of Y, it would not be a good idea to look at other people's prints to try to find those that have the qualities. It is not a practical way to find out what the causes are of X and Y, and what cameras or other gear that can potentially do something differently regarding X and Y. An analytical approach, with a knowledge of all important factors that go into it, can successfully identify what camera that can do more of X and less of Y, or if it doesn't relate to the camera at all, but some other factors.
