Major discovery for ME today.

won't have an interest. Today
I discovered the 300PF with or without the 1.4TCiii via Commlite
will AF fast enough for perched bierds on the Sony A7Riii.
I knew this Nikkor could BIF from my trials on the a9 but just now thought
to give it a go with the high res. Sony body. I'm elated. Sony doesn't have a
300mm prime in e-mount but via Commlite they do now!
You struck gold with the captures and the lens acquisition.
I've not seen a lens sharper since I labored under the weight of the Canon 300mm ISii.
Everytime I use the 300PF I'm enamored. Just put a Lenscoat on it to show it some love.
Yes. In terms of size and weight it gives my M43 birding kit a run for its money - and has better AF.

Quick question for those with this lens: if you've experience the VR issue at slower shutter speeds (like around 1/100 or so), have you tried shooting the camera in quiet mode (if available)?
I was playing around with a D850 and the 300PF with TC1.4 tonight, and VR is pretty shaky around those slow speeds. However, I turned on EFCS and shot in Qc mode, and things look solid. Focus shifted in a few shots, which threw things off, but the images were still sharp. This is a big, big difference from what I've seen using full, mechanical shutter.
Only downside I can think of is 3 fps, but if I'm shooting at such a slow speed anyway, odds are I don't need 7 fps.

There was, but I don't think it totally fixed things. I was seeing the issue on a D7200 and a D850, but it seemed worse on the D7200. Not all shots at those speeds were blurred, but many more than usual were. Seems like Qc is actually big help in that area. I know a lot of people probably never shoot this lens around those speeds, though.
A few taken with the D500 and 300mm pf at Lotherton Hall England. It has a large deer enclosure plus what was a bird garden but as they have now intoduced penguins and a few other animals they call it wildlife world.

Not the greatest composite but showing any curious, the 300PF and a9 via Commlite has no trouble AF-C tracking large white birds against a single background
