Nice work,TM. What do you think of this lens when compared to your other birding lenses?
Thanks, Arnie! The IQ's better at 300mm/420mm and it's stupid light and small.
Downside for me is initial acquisition, it's like looking thru a straw to find your target.
Had a bitch of a time with these owls in flight (hard to pick up anyway) I'm used to the
"view" of the 200-500 and 150-600's. First time out with it so I'll give myself a few shoots
before setting my review in stone. I'll give FX a go tomorrow...
I would have picked this up earlier with either zoom
and shooting BIF w/o a BushHawk is an unnatural act
Really nice Burrowing Owls and the Purple Martin captures are very cool. Great work both you guys!
When I am able to bring the camera along for work its the D500 with the 300PF and the TC on it. It is a challenge sometimes to deal with the light weight of it when shooting.
Some great images guys, I seen somebody with one of these whilst I was using the 300 f2.8 lump and amazed how small it was .
So this lens is sharp wide open with and without the TC-14 I love the f2.8 and mainly using it with the TC-17e, I have to stop down to f6.3-7.1 for best results, without TC its sharp wide open.
I'm now not sure whether to get the 300mm pf with TC-14e instead of a 200-500 as a lighter option to go with my 300 f2.8 . Is it worth paying extra for the TC-14e iii over the ii when used with the f2.8 and 4 PF ?

I have never used the 200-500mm, so I can't offer any advice on that decision. However, I have used both 1.4x TCs, and can say that I prefer the latest version. Putting it on the 300mm f/4 PF has no effect on image quality that I can tell (it will affect AF performance, due to going from f/4 to f/5.6). The latest 1.4x TC works great with every lens that I have tried it on (e.g., Nikon 500mm f/4 E).
The Mrs and I shot a Folk Festival over the weekend.
The D810/300 f4 PF kicked some major ass. Some 11 hrs
and hardly broke a sweat...small & light CAN be a good thing
I'll throw more up when I finish loading the Gallery
