Thank you, Steve. The two perch locations are equal distant from where I usually stand...approximately 15' or so in distance. I don't recall whether I moved in closer for the finch capture, but I may well have. Both are cropped, the finch more so.I would say that the exif info is quite probably accurate within a foot or so in variance.
Had fun this weekend at the Nevada City (California) Adult Soap Box Derby with the bare 300mm PF. Braved the bright sun and super hot temperatures to see my first soap box derby. It was a real treat! There were two divisions, speed and art. There were some real creative entries. Enjoy!
Been seeing some fantastic images with this lens for a long time and am desirous of it. Has the low shutter speed VR issue been resolved or not? There's a thread starting up on Dpreview with new owners claiming the problem has not been resolved. Not clear if it's just with Nikon D8xx models or what. I see some on here state the issue was resolved with the firmware update. I would assume the latest lenses have been updated.
@lorac, I am using the 300/4E VR on a D7100 and the VR issue has not been completely solved for me after the firmware update. If I want to be sure of crisp sharp images I keep my shutter speed at 1/250s or faster. So not the 4 stops gain for me, still I am quite happy with this lens.

Thank you and Chris Dees too. I don't see a real need to be able to hand hold 300mm below 1/200s. The IQ is fantastic and the weight unbelievable. I just hope it's available again soon.
