Thanks for the images JBPhotog. Can you describe what these are images of and which part of the image we should be looking at?

Okay for all you 'it's not flare it's got to be a light leak' people, here you go. And I promise I won't say I told you so, oops!

I'm guessing the light source caused a flare, which in turn was reflected from a surface inside the camera causing the hard line. The latter is what seems to be the issue, so technically it isn't a flare.

BTW -- Hope this doesn't cause a panic among 810 owners.

The flare is at the bottom of the image, the background is a foam core board and the upper part of the image is showing the ceiling.

As for replication, you will need a very bright specular light source to achieve this effect.

Don't forget what appears at the top edge of an image in reality is captured by the lower edge part of the sensor.

And just for sh*ts and giggles, here's one from my mirrorless Fujifilm XT-1 with the 56mm F1.2, bare lens, no hood.

Now can we say "move along, nothing to see here"?

Thanks again for the images and explanation. Are there any horizontal surfaces in the room, including the board and it's orientation relative to the cameras' imaging plane?

Floor and ceiling only. The foam core is leaning back a bit from vertical at the top while the camera is tipped up so the light source is at the bottom of the frame. Focus was set to minimum and the light source was a couple of feet from the front of the lens.

Thanks again. I'm trying to visualize how a radial lens and elements within the lens can lead to a flat projection like in your images. I'm picturing a elliptical object like frisbee and a light source in various orientations relative to it. Probably a brain fart but the only orientation I can see resulting in a flat projection is if the ellipse is held at edge relative to the light source which I'm not sure how a lens could angled to achieve that. Maybe I'm overlooking the effects of how the image is projected and the transformations that can occur in that projection. Btw, what angle were you holding the camera relative to the light source, just to help my thought process along.

JBPhotog:

If you cover the eyepiece, does the straight line still exist?

Thanks, JBPhotog, Like I said, I do value your experience and this certainly helps.

henry albert: I don't think the issue at hand has anything to do with light leaking from eyepiece but I am sure JBPhotog can help you answer your question.

Today i tried to provoke the "issue" outside,no lightbulbs.
Took 25 shots.
All of them with the sun just above the framing.
Using live view on 5 of them i could make the "issue" visible on all.
Then i tried 20 without live view, just using the viewfinder.
Every time changing the angle, trying to reproduce the "issue".
Result: not even a single frame showed the "issue" !!
So,for now I'm not wasting my time with it.

Was the issue visible in photos or just on live view(on screen)?

Just to add another possible cause pointed out by someone at dpreview as posted by Bruno here, and that is with regards to the focusing sensor sitting at the bottom of the mirror box.
It seems to be sitting slightly shallower then what is on my D800, I can hardly see the 3 windows flames of the focusing sensor on my D800 when I was trying to blow clean them, and yet it is so visible clear on the D750. Could this be the reason that the issue was found on wide angle lens and not on telephoto because for WA lenses it has a more convex inner element and sit closer compare to that of the tele, and therefore is easier to cause reflection. As for shooting without a lens, we can clearly see it is definitely possible with light directed into the sensor surface.
If this is the issue then it can easily be solved with a thicker felt tape that will lower the sensor surface and at the same time not thick enough to obstruct light towards the imaging sensor.

If that's the case, we will see D760 by May.

No... No... No... for you mshi, you will get a free felt tape shipped to your doorsteps and you have to DIY yourself. And if you damage anything inside, Nikon good old of USA can charge you for impact damage.

Tried to reproduce with a 28mm f1.8G with either live view and by taking pictures and no flare here. I was about 2 feet from a lightbulb. So it is a no issue for me.

Yes, if you can share your first few digits of your s/n will be nice.
If that was the case then maybe not all units are affected because I have already seen a mix of s/n with the issue.
Now! Let me poke fun with some of us here.
You see because it is Made in Thailand, they can't supply materials with a fixed tolerance! I am running for my life...
