I too, ditched my 300 2.8 + 2x teleconverter for this lens. Its sharpness surprised me, and it is VERY capable for birds in flight. What I like most is it provides so much maneuverability with its light weight and ability to change focal lengths. I can carry it with a black rapid strap and hand hold it all day.
With this lens I can get a close up of a bird, then zoom wider to allow for the wing extension when it takes flight, interacts with another bird, or I want to include more of the landscape.
It's been a pleasant surprise and quite liberating.
I too look forward to comparing it to the Sigma Contemporary, as the Sport would be too heavy compared to this lens.

Thanks for the post guys Ive been debating between the signma 150-500 and this lens, think I will go it.. Now I have to just talk the wife into it.
"Hunny if you really love me, you'll allow me to buy this lens. For us!...it's Christmas?"

That got blown out the water today. She was gripping about holding the 70-300 steady today. Guy walked by with a sigma 150-500, we stopped and talked with him. First thing out her mouth when we walked away was "there is way I would be able use that lens"
