I worked for many years in the advertising media buying industry, and the Sunday edition of the New York Times and especially the Main News section, was always considered geared to the consumer, albeit a "deep pockets" one. My guess is that this announcement pertains to a general market focus geared to the general public and less to the specific market of photographers and/or business professionals.

Just from the advertising it seems to be targeting the forum trolls running around spouting off about how canon is so far behind that it is impossible for them to produce a competitive sensor. So I really think we may be seeing canon leapfrog current gen Sony sensors.
Then all they have to do is design a sleek usable mirror less body that is actually ergonomic. That's something we know canon is good at.
Or maybe they're targeting the forum trolls running around spouting how Canon sensors are "good enough"
And unless they make the mirrorless body as large as a DSLR body, it will never have the type of ergonomics to satisfy those who criticize mirrorless bodies for being too small.
All that said, I remain skeptical that this is even about a sensor at all....but we shall see.

Nikon keeps releasing impressive cameras. Canon puts out cryptic press releases. It's getting a little hard to be a loyalist.
If I were to buy a Nikon camera, I would wait at least 6 months after they figured out to fix the initial batches. Case in point, D800/e with the major peripheral AF point issues. It took them almost a year. And how about the D600? A year later, they introduced a D610 to simply replaced the D600 and the value of the D600 went down the drain. Yes, you buy a camera to use but still it hurts when yours got replaced by something newer in just a year. I am not saying that Canon is immune to this, however, but Nikon initial QC leaves more to be desired.
Yes, Nikon introduces a lot of FF cameras, and frankly, too many actually, at least for my taste. This cutting into the market and price of the existing cameras. What happened to the said 24MP D610.... Did it get replaced by the 24MP D750?
Sorry for the off topic reply. Just blurting it out... .

I don't disagree but I can't think of a single competitive camera release in nearly 3 years.

If Canon released a "small" FF mirrorless camera ala the Sony A7 that would be the one thing that would make me reconsider selling the remainder of my Canon glass.
Well in this day and age I find it hard to believe that anything substantial would not have a rumor mill with it. Just look at the abundance of rumors that came with the 7DII. A 2.8 wide angle L and a high mp body have been floating around but no overwhelming chatter.
Foolishly my hopes are high.

This new box is intended for Canon customers that can't wait.
I'm sure there will be instructions on the side of the new box for the YouTube version unboxing vid's, since there is more time for the take, instructing the customer to open only one side at a time and waiting a bit soaking it all in before moving on.
Disclaimer: I am NOT a Canon employee, contractor, affiliated in any way or have any binding NDA contracts with Canon Inc.
The box will be made with INVISIBLE packaging, so the camera appears to "float" in space. There will be tactile markings on the invisible box to allow users to open the packaging and remove the items within.

Ummm...what's your logic here? Surely Canon would still continue to produce their behemoth 1-series cameras as well.
Canon's next body will have a -5ev center AF Point, other AF points will be -3EV, 'Eye Controlled Focus' will be integrated with DPAF, 'Articulated/Touch' screens will be standard as will be GPS, WiFi, a built-in compass and a speshul spinning top for us all to sit upon

There were rumors earlier this year that Canon was working with Fuji on a camera. Some speculation that it was a medium format camera.
Maybe Canon will release a camera with a medium format chip, that will work with existing Canon full frame lenses via a "built in" Speedbooster?
That would certainly be something that was considered "Impossible." Possibly with an upscaled Xtrans sensor??
Although a Speedbooster sounds too risky & gimmicky for Canon's style.
It doesn't make any sense, sorry. A speedbooster works the other way around. You can fit a FF lens into a smaller APS-C or micro 4/3 cameras and you gain the "speed" that way.

Wouldn't it be called an 'enlarger'? It'd be similar to a teleconverter, just without the hard vignetting.

Haven't you heard of the old eastern saying that says 聲東擊西 声东击西? In short by creating enough chatter about unrelated things, other cameras / products / etc., you can hide your own intentions and still keep secrets that you want to keep (under the noise of the chatter). Like the camera you don't want anyone to know about. The rumor followers have been so preoccupied with the 7D2, and the rumors surrounding it, that a lot of other things could well have slipped by -- under all that noise.

Technically, yes, it can. However, the name 'speedbooster' is widely used among APS-C and micro 4/3 mirrorless users and it sticks. Actually, the manufacturers of those gadgets came up with the name and well, it does boost the speed.

However, if Canon released such a body, you would not be able to mount your Canon glass on it without an adapter, same as you need to now with the A7...
I can't wait until it's a 1D? whatever so I can see all the people who bit** and moan producing the same lackluster work with the camera that answered their initial qualms.
