Thanks for your posts. I know that this isn't the first time that you've shared before and after images and that can be rare around here. There are many with strong biases toward quality images only having credibility if they look that way SOOC. This level of in depth processing isn't typically my approach (except for making heroic attempts to save something that I @#%$-ed up), but I can definitely appreciate the end result however it was arrived at.

Long focal lengths and wide apertures aren't for everyone, but these results are hard to argue with. They aren't PJ and

What they are is digital art. And there's nothing wrong with that. But people think these images are actually being staged and captured when they aren't. I actually wish she hadn't posted the composite images from the wagon shot, because I always really liked it, and knowing that it never really existed and was instead 'assembled' in Photoshop is somewhat disillusioning. It's a beautiful image, but for me at least, it's not real.

At least now some of undercurrent of "eye dissonance" associated with the lack of a shadow from the wagon makes sense. Same with the lack of warm rimlighting around the child.

Lisa, I enjoy seeing the before/after shots. I hope you don't let the "digital art" sort of comments get to you. Keep posting your amazing photos!

That is a beautiful scene of a baby sitting in a Radio Flyer in the middle of a road staring at a fantastic sunset.

The problem is that this scene never happened. It was fabricated from several different shots taken at different times.

I never said you weren't a photographer. But that image is, IMO, not a photograph. Because in my view a photograph needs to at least approximately resemble what the photographer saw when the scene was taken. We all make adjustments to varying degrees, and naturally some manipulate images more than others. Arguments can be made in many different directions for certain images. But I think you'll find most people would put that on the "digital art" side of the fence. It's a very heavily edited composite. *shrug*

For someone as talented and successful as you are, you have a rather thin skin. You've got a big fan club, so there's no need to get "annoyed" when some random person like me has a differing opinion. As you've been told before -- many times! -- when you post in a public forum, you will get a variety of views, and you aren't going to agree with all of them.

If you want to maintain the mystique of a composite image like that one, don't pull back the curtain to reveal the man behind it.

Sounds like a diatribe.
She did not paint these, they are photographs (manipulated).
Pull back the curtain, even Ansel manipulated his images.

Not all her photos are below f/2. That last photo in OP, for example, is at f/4.

Your comment is borderline backhanded...anyway, cheers!

There IS rim lighting around the baby (maybe you missed it?) and 99.9% of my work is not this kind of a composite. I had fun with this particular photo and felt compelled to share it. A more typical before and after for me would be this. And sorry, but this IS photography, not digital art. That annoys me so much. I absolutely *am* a photographer.

See, this is nice - a little more natural (than a kid about to be run over). However, like so many of your shots I can't help but feel I've seen it before. That you've found a formula that wins praise but may quickly become empty - the vignettes, long FL, soft bokeh, rimlit hair and autumn tones. Yours is technically solid work, but it's often missing a hook. That being said, we all have different tastes and for some your work is complete.

Lisa, I like your work. Have you ever learnt in a formal art institute - one in which questions and critiques are part of the learning process? Another member asked if you had thin skin. What do you think? I know you attract a lot of praise here at FM, which seems to encourage you. Please ask yourself if you are able to handle critique. And then whether or not you should continue to post here. It would be a poorer place if you chose not to.

After having read through some comments and your replies, I need to edit my own...

Your photos are truly excellent, some of the best I've seen without a doubt.

You do however need to learn how to handle some critique from people who may not always agree with your style. On forums, you often get critique, which for me, at least, is why I post. I don't post to listen to people blow sunshine up my rear end.

If you do get critique, accept it, embrace it and learn from it. This doesn't mean changing your style nor does it mean that people are "bored to tears" by looking at it. It only means be open for options and once in a while look at something with a new view.

Regards

Lisa, I'm really sorry for the comments made on here. You are an artist and I for one admire your style and truly enjoy your pictures. I sincerely hope you continue to share your work for those who do enjoy it.

I also, personally feel that Critiquing someones work, especially to the extent done on this thread, would be much more appropriate if and when it had actually been asked for it. If you notice her comments, no where in there did she ask to be critiqued. There was just joy at sharing some favorite older photographs just reedited. It's pretty sad the tone this thread took.

I couldn't disagree more, Kathy. If you post work, don't be surprised if you get critiqued. Hello? Is this not a forum? Regarding Lisa's work, I'd hazard a guess at comments being 95% praise, 5% critique/questions/suggestions.

If anything, if there is even a slight chance of critique helping Lisa to take her work further, then it should be welcomed, shouldn't it? Or should we all just wallow in platitudes with our swollen egos?

By the same token, if you notice her comments, no where in there did she ask for positive commentary either, yet people did so anyway. Judging Lisa's history of childish outbursts when not all comments to her work are positive, it would behoove her to state something such as "no critiques, compliments only". I'm not quite sure what "tone" you're referring to. Everyone has acted in a civil manner; no personal insults or name calling was thrown around. Honestly, it seems as if there is a tone in this thread, the worst offender is Lisa herself. I'd call the behavior childish. This is a public forum. There are compliments and critiques on almost every image sharing thread. The vast majority are intended to help the photographer or to start a discussion.

I feel the same way as some of the comments which give critique. Lisa does tremendous work, and has absolutely amazing digital manipulation skills. I wish my work was even half as good as hers. Without a doubt, she has her style. There is no problem with that. But I know some other great photographers who also have their own style. The distinction, though, is that Lisa seems to follow the same formula with each photograph, whereas other photographers have a style but do vary their formula, so to speak.

I don't know if I speak for others, but I can tell you why I would like to see something different from her: her work is very impressive, and I would like to see what else she is capable of with her knowledge and talent in both the field and with digital manipulation. Unfortunately, as of now, I haven't. Right now, to me, it's akin to that band who has released the same sounding album 8 consecutive times. The truly great bands grow; their albums don't sound alike, because they become more mature, more skilled, and influenced by new ideas.

I don't if Lisa will read this, seeing as she left in a bit of a huff by "deleting" her posts, but hopefully I shed some light as to the reasons why some of these comments are coming up. It's meant to be beneficial; something to gain insight and learn from. Not that she isn't respected, because she clearly is, and I too respect and admire her work, but if she learned how to handle criticism like an adult, and not storm off at the first sign of something other than a compliment, I think she would be even more respected, as a photographer, professional, and especially adult.
