Canon is already using Sony's 1" sensor. Most medium format players are using Sony's 50MP medium format CMOS sensor on their cameras.
There are rumors that Sony has developed a higher MP FF sensor soon to be released. (~46MP)
So, there is a possibility that Canon may include Sony's newest sensor on their flagship body and then trickle it down to consumer models.

Fred:
I speculated the same thing a few pages ago (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1318815/3#12584447). Based on the interview with Chuck Westfall, it sounds like Canon is starting to view the game as optics vs. optics. i.e. If you can get the same 46 mpx sensor, would you rather have an E mount, Nikon mount, or Canon mount? My guess is canon thinks they can win this game. And I think a lot of people would agree (Mk II teles, TSE, 24-70 is probably better, etc.)
I don't know how much margin they would lose by using a Sony sensor, but if they are 'too cheap' to put in a new fab, maybe it's cheaper to outsource their top of the line sensors. They probably make more margin on lenses anyway.
I had always read the upcoming high MP Sony design was 54MP, not 46MP.
Could Canon not make a 46MP FF sensor by scaling up their 18MP APS-C sensor? It works out to similar MP, but I'm not sure their dated 0.5um fab equipment could handle it.
They need to change their fab processes regardless though to get their DR out of 2007. Then again, maybe they don't. Much like Apple's strategy, they can choose to ignore pretty much whatever they want and people will still buy them by the truckload.

shortly after Sony will announce that bowing to the pressures of debtors and shareholders Sony has sold all its assets in the sensor division to Canon. Although other suitors were sought only Canon had the financial resources to meet the price Sony was seeking.

If that is true, I am most curious how DXOMark is going to grade the sensor... Bash it as usual with their biased controversial scoring system (not the measurements) just because it has the Canon tag... only to realize it's actually a Sony sensor under the hood?
It mentions a Sony FF CMOS 46MP sensor in January...
A7R II with vastly improved AF (for native lenses), and hopefully greatly improved metabones (for Canon lenses) with this sensor would be ungodly. I wonder if they'll crack the 15EV DR. Current D810 sensor is 14.8EV I believe.

But the point is that "augmenting" a Canon system with an A7r is conceptually different than "moving" to another system. Photographers like Fred or myself have chosen to augment our existing Canon systems, not move from them. Tempted to change systems altogether? In such an instance I think the "patience" argument is sensible. But tempted to augment your existing system with an A7r? If you have the money, why not?...
I can understand photographers who come to your conclusion — as I wrote, several that I know and respect and shoot with also decided to go that route.
For me, believing that Canon has only "fallen behind" temporarily (it has been only 11 months since the A7r was "announced in October 2013 and perhaps 9 months since it was available for US purchase in December), that they will almost certainly equal or exceed the quality of the Sony/Nikon option within what is (in the big picture) a relatively short time, and that I produce excellent image quality in the interim with what I have... from my perspective the argument to buy the Sony A7r body — as good as it obviously is in a number of ways — has not been quite compelling enough for me.
Sony is not Sony is not Sony. In this case the divisions are separated much like Samsung sold apple chips and displays.
Canon pride would be more an obstacle to use a Sony sensor in a EOS FF body over buying chips from Sony. It is a win-win-win canon, Sony and consumers win. Sony has no chance at selling $8500 DSLR bodies and accompanying lenses. super35 wrote:
I don't see Sony ever selling APS-C or FF Exmor sensors to Canon... because both Nikon and Sony camera divisions would suffer.
Unless it is mandated by the Japanese government to save the Japanese camera industry, then all bets are off.

YMMV,

But what I think you misunderstand is I don't agree with the way you conflated augmenting a system with changing a system. To try a different context, why do you own a Fuji mirrorless camera in addition to your Canon DSLR? Wouldn't it be better to wait for Canon to come up with a better mirrorless system?

hopefully sony also quit the silly RAW compression too
if they managed to do a full sensor read at 36MP for video as they do at 12MP with the A7S and made it record internal 4k too, then it would be ultra ungodly. 36MP full sensor read is tricky at this point though I bet. Maybe if they bump to 39MP and do a nice binning....
