Amateur sports played by student athletes is the reason the 7D was released.

Someone layed a "Bad Karma" guilt trip on Fujio Mitarai when it was brought to his attention that parents were missing memories of their student athletes because Canon refused to install an AF system in 10Ds and 20Ds that sold retail for $300 in the EOS 3.

The Japanese are so superstitious.

Two years later the 7D was released.

And of course you have stats to back that up?

I said think. Honestly I don't see that one in the wild too often.

Actually, a good deal of Canon's Rebel advertising this Spring was devoted to young (U 12) children playing baseball and the 7D was introduced for athletes over 14 or15, that are starting to move at the speed of an adult.

Sure, and so will lots of others.

That would put the 7DMkII in a completely different product category than its predecessor. Has Canon ever done that with a camera that is considered a "Mark II" version, rather than an entirely new product line?

All three 5D's could be considered to be in different product categories, given the jump in sensor resolution with the Mk.II and the jump in AF with the Mk.III, among other generational advances.

Wow, where did you get those credible stats from, Canon?

Must be psychic power, there is no other way to come up with such precise "stats"

what a crock of $#@, most so called soccer mums I know are using 60D or smaller, most birders I know are using 7Ds nikons equivalent etc. Not everyone wants to carry a huge lens for focal length, I could probably scratch the money together and buy a big canon, but could I be bothered carting one around....no, like most of those who hike around the birding areas where I live, I prefer a 400mm lens with a crop camera, we don't all sit around in bird hides waiting with a full frame and big lens for that illusive bird shot. I will be prepared to pay up to $2600 for a good cropper if canon can manage to get it right

Me too. I am way, way past 40, petite, and there's no way can I pack around one of the really big lenses. I find myself grabbing the 100 400L instead of the 300 2.8 IS with 2X when I can away with it and sometimes when I shouldn't just because of comfort. That 300 combo is my absolute limit at packing around. I am ready for a new 7DII along with a new 100 400L VII to go on it. If, as you say, they "get it right" then that simple combo could possibly, replace quite a bit of my gear and be alot more comfortable to boot.

Oh, and all the soccer Mom's I know shoot Rebels with the 70 300's or the 55 250's on them. I've never seen one with a 7D.

The 5D to 5DII was evolutionary- mainly just more pixels, which was the name of the game. The II to III, that is more of a jump, but considering that they didn't bump the pixels up past 30MP, they had to do something. I struggle with the low FPS and AF on the 5DII, hence the 1DIII I picked up.

To me, the 5DIII and the 1DX where a major change in Canon's product offerings. Pros got 1D and 1Ds bodies for speed vs MP while semi-pros got 20-50D and 5D(I or II) as a kind of parallel. For less where all the other EOS models that I never can figure out what the frick they are. That two-model/two-line held from 2000 till 2009 with the introduction of the 7D. The 1DX and 5DIII shattered it.

Why no 1DsIV with a 30MP sensor? I'm not a big fan of the MP wars, and 20ish is enough for me, but that is where the wheels fell of the bus.

I'm really excited about the 7DII. Will it have enough bump over my 1DIII to push me? If its 20+MP, that helps with crops, but I'd rather put my money in glass with the rumored 100-400 over my 70-200/2.8IS.

Will the 100-400 be fast enough for high school level sports?

I would have preferred to stay on crop and put my money into glass too- but I like to shoot in lower light, and that's simply where the 60D failed, and the 6D performs miraculously.

But I'm also excited about the 7D II- if it can do what I'd need it to do, I'll have to start saving up and re-prioritize my wishlists .

Yeah 60D was a meh camera IMO. 7D II will determine whether I stay wholly loyal to Canon.

love my 1DIII, if only it was more than 10 megapixel, I took some shots in lower light tonight with my 7D, admittedly they were at distance of birds and I wonder if even the 5DIII would have made a better image, I was very disappointed with the results, when I have to choose between the three cameras I own it can be hard, I know where I can get choose enough to the subject the 1DIII always produces the goods. 7DII will be the decider for me on if I look at more expensive lens for the 5DIII or upgrade to 1D4. I'm hoping the 7DII will be a game changer

John

A modular sports body with similar specs to a 1DX for half the price? I think there are going to be a lot of people signing up for that including me. The 1DX is a great sports body but at $6800 it's out of the reach for a lot of mid level action shooters. Even a 1D4 at $5000 was pushing it.

This thing will be kick butt if it's really a mini-1DX. Combined with an updated 100-400 that is rumored to be much lighter then the current one and you are going to see a lot those babies sold.
