Good news! I was notified today from adorama that the en-el4a battery is back in stock. I’ve been on their notify list for over a year. Mine is on its way, I hope.
Thanks for the heads up! Mine showed up today with a 2020 date and my D3s reads it as a 0/4. Good timing too, as just today I discovered that the old EN-EL4 for my D2X wouldn't take a charge. Not bad for a battery that likely came with the camera eighteen years ago.
The chip inside the D700 was designed by Nikon and that's why. After D700, all the chips they used are Sony chips. That saves Nikon lots of money for sure.
I’ve got one from 05 that came with the camera. It’s condition 4 but still takes a charge. If I don’t use it though it will lose about 5-10% a week. I can take it out of rotation now. My new one is a 2020 also. I bought a new one in early 2022 and it was a 2019.
These are some excellent colors. Makes me want a D3S, but I never liked how the vertical grip area has no AF joystick on it. If I find it cheap enough (and unused enough) I don't think I'll care though. Kasper6188 wrote:

Yeah, that's about how the old EL4 was acting for the last few months. I didn't think much of it since I'd just swap batteries between the D2X and D3s if one was low or dead. I guess I was just chasing the same dying battery.

After reviewing thousands of pictures -- analog and digital -- that I've made over the last fifty years or so, I came to the conclusion that the D3 is, indeed, a joy to shoot. I just love the build quality and the low-light image quality, and the file size is so easy to work with. Over the past two years I've gone old school. I got rid of my D810 and D500 and big heavy lenses and my current kit is a D3s and three AFD lenses: the 28 2mm.8 (much maligned), the 35mm 2.0, and the 50mm 1.4. I've got excellent examples of each. I added a D7100 and a Tokina 11-16 2.8 to give me a super wide-angle capability. Here are a couple of shots from my first D3 (circa 2012) and the D3s I acquired in 2022....Show more →
If you REALLY want to go old school I'd suggest you add a few manual focus Nikon lenses to your kit. They are beautifully made, reasonably priced AND a pleasure to us. For those of us who do, we consider turning the focusing ring one of the true joys of taking photos... this was shot hand held with the D700 with a 28 f/2.8 AI-s mounted.
Some hand-held panos at sunset with the D700 and 28-70mm + 35mm f2 AF-D lenses.
I didn't expect the old sensor to handle the dynamic range as well as it did. Nice surprise
Another blast from the past... taken with the 24 f/28 N.C. with the Nikon AI conversion kit installed. This is the Oakland/Bay Bridge taken from the San Francisco waterfront.
