Do y'all think the D700 will ever become invalid/irrelevant/phased out? Or will it be one of those models that no matter how old it is it's still worth keeping around? Like picking up one of the old, but classically comfortable Nikon film models?
And the second part of that question is, do y'all think technology will ever NOT support the D700? For instance, editing software - do you think they will always support legacy camera profiles?
I just picked up a low shutter count D700. I mainly bought it as a cheap extra body with a fast frame rate. MB-D10 grips and EN-EL4A batteries can be bought for cheap. Image quality is good enough as long as you don't need to print big and you keep cropping to a minimum. Saying that, I think the D750 and D810 are better for mid-budget A-cameras depending on what your intended usage is for.
Even though I own a D850 & D7000, my D700 still holds an honored placed in bag. The following images were captured with 1.7 teleconverter using a 300 AFS-D lens, handheld:

This image is stellar! Could you share a bit about your post processing on this one?
Thank you very much Chris. Embarrassingly, my pictures hardly have any major post-processing worth talking about. I use Nikon ViewNX-i, which is quite basic. I will have a look at home to see what I did or share the raw file. Key for this one was facing North-easterly, in winter, the morning light is still to my right with a much warm glow than in summer. The backlight is just part of the mix at that time of day in May.
EDIT: added Raw(seen via Capture NX) + ViewNX-i edit below. Not visible is a -1EV. Original much hotter.
