It's amazing how good it still is. And that applies to the 24-85 too.
I just found a local bargain, a barely used D700 and got it.
I'm now waiting for the memory card from ebay, I ordered a CF adapter for a wifi SD.
why does it always take so long?

Enjoy. It's got a certain enduring thing about it. I didn't get as good a deal as you probably got. Mine had ~28k clicks on and the choice was not as much as it is now. However, I got what I think were very good deals on the 24-85 and 70-210 zooms. That made me not expect much from them, only to find they are much better than I expected. The closeup option between 35 and 85mm is a boon.
This is what I mean, and I just make an offer on a D3 with low shutter auctions that was accepted. So fingers crossed it's in stated condition I'll be back in the D3 club.
My D3 arrived today, in excellent condition. The only thing is the battery is at 1 (dying) but for what I paid I'll buy a new one. Are the "Nikon EN-EL4a out of china/japan for $30 legit or should I look at a aftermarket?
Here's a quick test shot from this evening with my Nikon 50mm f1.8g special edition lens:
