i am very close to having a client sign up for a docu-type portrait project. it should be environmental portraits but with minimal to none off camera flash.
i borrowed a friend's old canon 5d to use as a prototype for the prospective client to visual the concept. i liked the canon's 12mp images but some of the ergos/handling was not to my liking. i am now actively looking (and lusting) after a used/previously owned d700 to employ as the potentially right tool for the right job.
again, thank you to those who have shared their thoughts and images.

this thread has been an inspiration.
thank you for the effort and the sharing.
i'm more of a motion/video shooter.
but suddenly i'm getting calls for stills work.

An inspirational thread indeed! I'm glad I'm not the only one who cherishes the D700's images; the color is just so amazing straight out of camera, to me!
Rob, I'm facing a similar dilemma, only I'm needing to go from being exclusively a stills shooter to a stills/video shooter. Being that Nikon is not at the forefront of video features, I'm looking strongly at replacing them and going to the Sony system. I already sold my primary workhorse D700 and now have two backup bodies left, with around 7,500 acutations each. I'm debating whether to keep one or sell both and just completely switch to Sony. It saddens me to think of having to step up from a camera that seems so perfect.

D750, from what I hear and see, does a good job with video.

That's good to know. I'm wondering how future proof any video option is on a DSLR without at least 4K 30. Maybe the D750's successor will add it?
When I tried the D610 a while back, I was shocked with how different the colors were straight out of camera as compared to the D700.
The D750 can output flat files, so that should be good for color grading.
Very true on the initial output difference between the D6x0 and D700. You can get them to the same place, but it does take a minute.
I've been shooting m43 or Ricoh GR mostly these days as I've become more of a wimp and don't want to lug the D700 around. I was going through a bunch of chicken photos for a project and was impressed with this one and thought, "Wow, that GX8 actually makes some great images." And then I looked at the EXIF and saw it was the D700 with the Sigma 85/1.4. I should've known better. Don't even remember taking this photo. Still impressive after all these years.
