So long as you don't need to crop heavy, get somewhat close in metering, the D3/700 is still an incredible image maker!!!

There's still plenty out in the wild but I'm told the slower VR is better...and you and your D700 aren't a match made in heaven either. I'm in the same boat but the combination works so well. I love the close up ability of this one between 35 and 85mm. Nikon doesn't do that anymore. On the other hand I get offered the equivalent of a can of Coke for the D700. So, I just keep shooting when the mood allows.
