Another great thread, I shoot the D7K, but keep toying with the idea of a D700 as another option. Just hard to bring myself to part with the money for an older body, but the images sure are fantastic. I could live with the lower megapixels as I never seem to print much more than 8x10 and a occasional 11x14. These threads sure do keep me interested.

Another D7K shooter here. If you can get a good deal, I highly recommend a D700. Everything the D7K does, the D700 does better. The only loss you have is reach, and a few MPs . The extra resolution is really not worth the worry if you don't crop too much.

Real-world scenario w/ using both at the same time...
Once upon a time, 1 of my 2 D700 was unavailable, so I borrowed a friend's D7k to cover an indoor corporate event while using the other D700. Both bodies were set up to trigger the same 4 x off-camera flashes.
While a D7k is decent enough to produce good results in capable hands, the difference in IQ between the two was considerable, enough that for MY work, I'll never consider using a DX body.
I have a question for the D3S shooters. I recently bought one for kid sports and action to supplement my DF.
With my DF, I almost always use AF-C back button focus w/ 9 points.
With the D3S, is the camera smart enough and fast enough to use "auto area" focus or AF-C 51 point 3D? My experience so far indicates no, but this may be due to user error
Auto area works great if the subject closest to you is what you want to be sharp.
51 point 3d works great when used in the right situation. An example of when not to use it is when the subject you are focusing on is the same color as other subjects in the frame, like football it will probably get confused. The system uses color recognition to follow the subject you focused on initially throughout the frame.
