Thanks, Kry27. My findings are the same, f:2.8 is oftent the best, or at least f:2.0.
For non-portrait, I fully agree. I feel this may at the same time negate the premium of this lens. As I feel most short tele will be pretty good after f2. same thing happen with Bokeh. Someday, I have to do some serious testing about this since I have nikon 85mm 1.8G on hand as well. My problem with 80lux for stop down use is flare during backlite. FYI my copy start #33XXXX.

I don't know...mine copy is very sharp WO. It's just a matter of nailing the focus. Zhangue's copy WO is sharp, too. And when you nail it...the lens really shines!
Gregg
Greg, I won't say my copy is sharp, they are good for my 12M D700, but not capable to resolve A7 or D810 WO I have. But for my preference, I am not sure I want it sharper as I fear it comes not for free. I for sure notice it can get sharper with longer distance, which is normal for many fast glass.
One thing for sure nail focus is important for any fast glass, but general speaking, Leica R is more tolerant for slight error (very important, as I am talking about within 1~2mm range error, which could happen anytime easily) from their gentle focus transition that giving still beautiful rendering image. In the same case with Otus or MP, the pics have to be thrown away.

I understand where Phillipe and Roland are coming from, since those sentiments are what made me decide I was better off "trading down" to the Summicron 90. But I don't disagree with Gregg. The Lux is sharp (enough) wide open. The problem isn't the in focus areas, but the harsher transitions between in focus and out of focus and the watercolor bokeh. Used at the right distance with the right background, the lens is capable of some beautiful stuff wide open, but for general use, including most things focused closer than 3M, the results are consistently better stopped down to f/2 or slower. Just my opinion, of course.

Brad, I think you are right about stop down portrait. I personal will explore that region more, as I have been thinking to improve my portrait focusing more on pic itself than lens rendering but not with Leica R I am afraid, as the problem for me is with Leitax on Nikon's OVF, shooting at working aperture give me problem nail focus. and slow me down a lot. I never a big fan of hit zoom in EVF focus and take the shot for portrait, it disconnect me from the process at which I need extreme concentration.
As a side note, I agree stop down will result different/sharper image, better to some, but I feel use character lens like 80lux stop down is questionable move in term of value and usability. This is purely from hobby (lens rendering) point of view, as a truly great portrait could be made with any lens and most of them are from L or G
In other word, if you see a excellent portrait with 80lux at f2.8, I will try not associate the success with Lens but photographer
All personal opinion.
