Exactly. It is sharp enough, but then, one's got to nail the focus. THAT is the thing I'm still learning. I'll maybe never really get "there", but who knows...
Using f/2 or f/2.8 has not only an effect on my margin of error (of course the goal is not to use it as a margin, but still nail it where it has to be exactly). It also gives a different drawing. This is correct, of course:

Thanks, Kry27. My findings are the same, f:2.8 is oftent the best, or at least f:2.0.

For non-portrait, I fully agree. I feel this may at the same time negate the premium of this lens. As I feel most short tele will be pretty good after f2. same thing happen with Bokeh. Someday, I have to do some serious testing about this since I have nikon 85mm 1.8G on hand as well. My problem with 80lux for stop down use is flare during backlite. FYI my copy start #33XXXX.

Greg, I won't say my copy is sharp, they are good for my 12M D700, but not capable to resolve A7 or D810 WO I have. But for my preference, I am not sure I want it sharper as I fear it comes not for free. I for sure notice it can get sharper with longer distance, which is normal for many fast glass.

One thing for sure nail focus is important for any fast glass, but general speaking, Leica R is more tolerant for slight error (very important, as I am talking about within 1~2mm range error, which could happen anytime easily) from their gentle focus transition that giving still beautiful rendering image. In the same case with Otus or MP, the pics have to be thrown away.

Brad, I think you are right about stop down portrait. I personal will explore that region more, as I have been thinking to improve my portrait focusing more on pic itself than lens rendering but not with Leica R I am afraid, as the problem for me is with Leitax on Nikon's OVF, shooting at working aperture give me problem nail focus. and slow me down a lot. I never a big fan of hit zoom in EVF focus and take the shot for portrait, it disconnect me from the process at which I need extreme concentration.

As a side note, I agree stop down will result different/sharper image, better to some, but I feel use character lens like 80lux stop down is questionable move in term of value and usability. This is purely from hobby (lens rendering) point of view, as a truly great portrait could be made with any lens and most of them are from L or G

In other word, if you see a excellent portrait with 80lux at f2.8, I will try not associate the success with Lens but photographer

All personal opinion.

ARGH! Now that must be painful and, even if we don't hope so for sure, can take a long time for recovery.

On the positive side: Your eye still works

Wow - that sucks!
I hope you have a good physiotherapist. I happen to live with one. I am prone to bio-mechanical failure at my age and for the most part she can help fix me up.

Maybe you should change your nickname to _hobbles_ during the convalescence.

I wish you a speedy recovery!

thanks guys!

not much pain other than when it happened (though surgery tomorrow might change that), but i'm basically not supposed to put any weight on it for 8 weeks.

perhaps this will give me time to go through my photo archives and see what i've overlooked...

hobbles, i like it!

KK, if, like many Swedes, you speak German, this is one of the funniest attempts at Galgenhumor that I can remember..

Good luck with the surgery Derek. I hope you can recover more quickly than anticipated. Having torn my ACL, even though an achilles may be worse, I know what a grind the physical therapy can be. All that with a new baby too. Stressful times, take good care of yourself and your family.

Philber: yes, Galgenhumor runs in my family. Glad someone got the geist of it.

Derek / Steve: I am the lucky one then: I "just" tore my calf a few years ago. It healed up a tad short but after tearing it up again (on purpose this time) it healed nicely. One of the very few cringe worthy injuries I can think of is tearing the achilles tendon - and take it from a guy who has cracked his skull (which, as some people say; explains a lot).

Derek, best wish for your surgery and quick recovery. I had the same un-fortune happened 15 years ago during basketball game in College. Surgery is still make me scary till now as the doctor fail to anaesthetize me at the time, they have to fixed it in the middle of surgery.

The good thing is you will be able to run, jump as normal just not as fast/high as before And the fixed achilles tendon will be stronger than normal one.

Make sure do a lot of stretch and strength training during recover.

Derek, get better but don't rush with your recovery if you don't have to. This comes from a guy who ripped his bone apart mountain biking couple years back, and I tell you, there are benefits of being taken care of in the middle of summer

Back to business; my web hosting server had a major hardware failure on Tuesday and I finally got it back on-line. Bummer as a new HP ProLiant server was waiting to migrate to.

michael – no anesthesia! that sounds excruciating.

it's reassuring to hear you recovered well. sounds like no slam dunking likely in my future though.

surgery went well and i'm particularly relieved to find that i can still rock the baby to sleep with my foot elevated above my heart (where it's supposed to stay for the next 2 weeks). that's about the only useful thing i can do around the house for a while...

henrik – the tendon rupture looks a lot worse than it feels. i always thought it would be incredibly painful, but i can now say definitively that isn't that bad. dislocating my knee hurt about 10x more and after the nearly complete rupture there wasn't really any pain to speak of (just weakness). i didn't even need to take any ibuprofen or anything between the time of the injury and surgery. apparently there just aren't a lot of nerves or blood flow to the heel.

anyway, a couple left over pics from the last trip to the beach with the 35 lux pre-asph:

Kry27: Grüezi! We simply say Galghumor.
EDIT: Humör is more "temperament" or "mood".
Humor is Humor.

Derek:
If you want to you could PM me with the exercise regime that you have been given post surgery. There is a wealth of rehab knowledge over here that I have access to. I am somewhat involved with the running community and I have friends working with runners/athletes on the highest level, both as surgeons and in post surgery rehab. I could have a quick look into it and see if they have missed anything that might speed up/enhance the outcome. One good thing to know is that achilles tendon wear is almost always bilateral so a rupture doesn't mean that only one side is affected prior to the injury - it is just that side that snapped, usually the dominant leg. The other side may very well be frail too and you need to remember that when you start exercising again. Work both them legs.

Derek...
Sorry to hear about your heal. But, glad to hear that surgery went ok. AND, that you can still rock and hold the Little man!! Very important!
Traded my Vario Elmar 35-70/4 for a very late model, German made Summicron R 50, and here are some of the first shots. Did a few comparisons yesterday, and it seems sharper in the extreme corners than my Summilux E55, but I need to do some more testing...

Shot this same scene with the Lux and my Rokkor 35-70 previously. I deliver to this guys house at least 3 days a week!!

^^ Very nice Greg

I finally dug out some old shots with my Mandler glass. All shot on the Canon 5D classic. The first was taken with the R 50 summicron version II. The other three were taken with the R 35 summicron vII. There haven't been many posted with the R 35 summicron vII, but I always liked this lens for the bokeh and could live with the softish corners.
