Yes it is only 500mm but it is a couple hundred bucks cheaper. I understand the Tammy actually only gets to 580mm anyway.
There has to be something going on with that lens and Tamron.
Received a note from my credit card today that B&H had charged my account for the lens. So I checked my order and low and behold the invoice has gone to the warehouse for the lens to be shipped…….yippeeeeeeeeee!!! I hope others are receiving good news as well.

Yeah and the Sigma only goes to 465mm or so. Tammy is actually very good for a zoom in regards difference between actual and stated FL. The Canon 100-400L is about 385mm.
If you believe DxO it has, "Measured focal length: 149.7 - 495mm", for the Sigma. And, "Measured focal length: 152.4 - 586.5mm", for the big Tammy. So you are losing 90mm for a lens that you can have today and is cheaper. The only real big drawback to the Siggy is no eBand coating, if that is important to you.

Just offering "choices" to folks that may not have their back-order filled in time. Plus correcting the false info in the previous post about the actual focal length of each.
I understand this is apples to oranges, but I preordered this for Nikon from buydig when it was released in mid may. 4 weeks ago I was 31st on their list to receive this, 2 weeks ago the same, and it is now shipping out today. Thought the wait for Nikon was going to take much longer.
Tamron better get their act together, with Canon finally readying a 100-400L replacement.Tamron needs to establish a good reputation quickly else it be forgotten by most people. Sure it'll still be popular if you are on a budget, but not a lot of people would give up the vastly better AF of the Canon lens for extra reach IMO.

Tamron will be fine- if anything, the cost of the new 100-400L will drive up the price of the old one, and the Tamron will still be a significantly longer lens with effective AF and VR, if not up to Canon's current pro-grade teles.

The cost of the new 100-400 will not drive up the cost of the old one.
At 560 mm with a 1.4x TC, I will take the new 100-400, regardless of price.
According to resellerratings.com, people report mixed results. I'll wait my turn at B&H. I've survived this long, another couple months won't make a difference.

I'd rather in focus 400mm shots than oof 600mm shots. With pixel densities increasing and the 7D II rumoured to be 24MP, even with just 400mm, you'll have a decent amount of reach even with a lot of cropping.
I'm not writing off the Tamron, but they have a long way to go to prove this is a viable action lens. If you don't do much fast action, it's already a nice lens with some excellent IQ.
Personally I'm hoping Sigma releases something higher end like a 100/150-500 f/4-5.6 OSS Sport series. If if it can deliver on AF and IQ, I'd gladly pay $3K and since it's a Sigma, I'd expect more like $2-2.5K.
