p.1 #1 · Tamron 150 - 600mm back orders

I,ve had one of these lenses on back order for just over a month. I was wondering how long the average wait time for this lens is. Has anyone recently received one? When did you order it? I'm ready to stop looking at pictures and start taking some.

Use the search function. There are a few threads right here in the Canon Forum about serious Ai Servo AF issues with this lens and certain Canon bodies.

One can hope that this delay is Tamron figuring out and fixing the problem, although they have denied there even is a problem... there's a thread on that too.

As one with more than a smidgeon of experience with manufacturing I can tell you with a fair degree of certainty that unless every single Canon dSLR owner is on the waiting list for this lens, Tamron could have easily caught up with pent-up demand since release in January.... Something else is going on.

I ordered mine from B&H early April - they've stated this week they have no information as to when Tamron will be shipping. So I have to believe you're probably correct that there's more going on here than strictly high demand.

Adorama and B&H have reportedly been delivering this lens for months. It is still on back order because they have not gotten through the pre-order list, as people keep putting their names on it.

You will get a much more accurate answer talking to some retailers than asking here. Ask the store where you have your back order.

Actually B&H has no idea when Tamron will be shipping them this lens. At least that is what they told me this week.

I ordered locally at 2 stores in Feb . I did not write down my number but still at upper 30's at one and upper 40's at other . Dealer said a few came in and a few people cancelled their orders .
Maybe canon will upgrade the 100-400 before the Tamron factory pays their electric bill and starts factory back up .

It's tough getting info on this lens. I contacted Adorama and Tamron and received answers which told me nothing. At least here I discovered that Adorama back orders date back to mid February. If anyone gets one I'd appreciate a heads up. As far as the AI servo problem I read a bunch of threads and they are a bit contradictory. Some 7D owners suggest they found a solution in camera settings. I still think overall it will be a good lens for me and I'm looking forward impatiently to receiving one. So to those of you who have and will continue to provide good info THANKS! To those of you who just don't like the lens or like posting suggestions that I have not done my research, go away.

Ultimately, its your money and depending on what/how you shoot, you may love this lens.....

That said, the underlying collective message in those "contradictory" threads is that the more your subject darts about, the worse the AI Servo problem gets with this lens. In many cases when people post that this lens "does well with action shots" we find on further digging that their definition of "action" is a bit different. An animal trotting left to right across your field of view may be "action" but it is far from a bird flying at a 45 degree angle towards you at 80mph.

If you are shooting BIF or anything that moves as fast or erratically, this lens is a complete failure with the 7D and 1D4 and perhaps others. Any Canon lens in a similar price range (100-400, 400 5.6L, etc) will beat the AF pants off the Tamron. There is no contradiction in this.

Its a shame, because I really liked this lens..... if they fix this issue, I would likely buy it again.

Called BH Photo today to check on the status of my order, placed around the beginning of March.
They report receiving small quantities, have over 500 copies on backorder, and of course no specifics on timing of future shipments.
I am of the camp hoping this means it isnt worth it for Tamron to ship lenses that might be returned in high numbers and that a fix is being developed for the AF issue with certain bodies.

I've been thinking the same thing. There was a flood of people getting lenses at first, and then all of a sudden the flow stopped and has been a mere trickle - for a very long time

p.1 #14 · Tamron 150 - 600mm back orders

I got my Nikon mount version via a B&H December-24-2013 preorder just yesterday.

Nikon mount delivered May 20,2014 is serial #00196x,
Eos mount on same order arrived Jan-21-2014, serial #00121x.

Are these serial numbers unique to mounts or entire lens run? I have no clue.

2,000 or 3,200 made using my 2 lens serials, either way, it seems to be a low production run so far.
Both Canon & Nikon were delivered to Japan market about 3 weeks before USA:

http://www.tamron.co.jp/en/lineup/a011/index.html

I'm sure someone knows, what's the highest serial number Eos mount out there ?

For me I can see the limits of these when compared to high end Nikon & Canon made superteles.
I've read the lens plays well with 6D and 5DIII & I own neither.

At $1,069 admission I am satisfied
w/ this superele zoom w/ ring motor autofocus w/ vibration control & w/ 6 year original owner warranty.
These features made this pair a must have for my Canikon system.
Could it be better ?
Not @ $1,069 from either Canon or Nikon.

I just spoke with a customer service rep at Adorama (at their request that I update credit card information on file with them). He was very polite, as usual, as Adorama is a class operation. I've had mine on order since mid-February. As far as I can tell, the delay is not explained by my being far down a list of orders. Rather, it sounds like Adorama has none to ship, and, moreover, Tamron has told Adorama it has *no estimated data of availability of this item*. This information is consistent with other messages in this thread. The most plausible explanation in my view (a guess, which others have also ventured) is that Tamron -- without wanting to admit error -- quietly ceased production and is scrambling to fix the AF issue before restarting their production lines.

At least one person said they got the Nikon - I know that it is like saying ford and chevy , but if others start getting Nikons - that might means they are working on Canon fixes .
Just checked - B & H - NIKON on back order too .

At one point B & H told me they would be getting some in on May 15th but I haven't seen ayone getting them. I needed something for a trip coming up the end of this month that was light and portable. I went ahead and grabbed a 100 400 instead but I think the Tamron would have been a better choice.

I sold my (really sharp and nice) 100-400 in Feb to fund purchase of the Tamron. Big mistake! Been using my 70-200 II w/ 1.4x III since then, but sure would be nice to have that longer glass back in stock!

I sold my 100 400 too. I actually had one of the first Tamrons but was unhappy with the inconsistent AF on my 1DIV and returned it. I think if the 100 400 mark II does actually appear it would end up being my first choice and this new 2013 version of the 100 400 will also be for sale. That said, I really did want a good copy of the Tamron for my 10 day trip with my gkids. I love the size and weight of it and would have just taken my 5DIII to use it with.

I agree that something is going on because the flow seems to have just stopped.

I would have preferred getting both these Canon & Nikon Mount Tammys delivered a month after I ordered both12-24-2013 to compare at same moment in time. The press was hot on the lens a month prior, it made zero sense for me to wait & wonder about the pair. I went to B&H maybe 5 times a day and within minutes of the link going live I locked them in. I guess that was 10 hours before the hot linky appeared here at FM.

I would have liked to have been able to compare both in my hands 1-21-14, but all I got was EOS version.

Now its 5-21-14 & I just got the Nikon some 5 months after I authorized a charge for it.

Thesedays I am torn between both Canon & Nikon systems so I am stuck with outfitting both. These two lenses seem pretty identical in what they capture & don't capture even though my D700 af performance is superior to 5DII the Tammy lens results are the same so far.

I figured if/when I get newer cameras like 6D or 5DIII upgrades in next 5 years I could send that 150-600 into Tamron for warranty. Their 6 Year warranty is absolute best in camera industry. I wish Canon glass had 6 year warranty or Canon could be like Nikon USA and up only offer up 5 years coverage.
