Went on some hide photography and this lady buzzard decided to land in front of my lens.

Christian, you may as well just change your tag name to "golden hour". Copyright it and be done with it. I'm always amazed at the quality of light you manage to shoot in.

Thanks! And that's in spite of the 120+ rainy days we've had this year, lol.

I like to have at least some directionality to the light, even in mostly overcast conditions. When the light is dead I pretty much always take a pass.

I took this image in May 2018, but I don't think I have posted it on FM yet. This eagle stole the rabbit (which was still alive) from some foxes that had caught it and brought it back to their den. The image was taken with a D850, the 500mm f/4 E, and the latest 1.4x Teleconverter.

Anyone have any experience with the older non-VR versions of this lens? I'm thinking of picking one up. I plan to avoid the AF-i model, but I am looking at the AFS versions pre VR (I believe there were two). Any particular model I should be looking at? Should I just wait a significantly longer time to save for the VR version? I already have a gimbal and tripod so I'm thinking I can pick up the older model and then sell down the road to help fund the VR version when I can get that.

The AFS II is a little lighter than the G, but make sure it works because I seem to remember that parts can't be had from Nikon any more.

That said, handholding this lens without VR would be challenging even for me, so I fail to see its appeal.
