I originally had the 500 AF-S model and in 2015 sold it for the FL version. I find the biggest improvement is the glass with its newer coatings and such, maybe an improved in contrast and some color. As far as VR, well the difference is in handholdability. My original version I would definitely mostly use on a tripod and now with the FL, I use mostly handheld. The whole balance of the FL is different being not so front weighted due to the fluorite glass. Of course I had the price from my older version to buy the FL, for the price of the newer lenses are quite an eye opener. A few images with the FL version.
