I am going to be selling my original 300mm F2.8 AF later this summer to fund my racecar build. But I do love the results I get with it. AF could be better, and it obviously isn't as sharp as new 300mm lenses, but there is nothing like F2.8 @300mm.
An old image I found in my archives that I hadn't posted. I have since sold this beautiful lens because I got the 400 f2.8E FL VR, but it still is one of Nikon's best.
D810 + 300 f2.8 VRII, 1/640s f/4.5 at 300.0mm iso640
The old school era of this lens still is my favorite version, a beast but on the D800 and a sturdy tripod shooting ground up its just an all around winner.
Two shots taken from this past weekend at the CMSA WWMS Mounted Shooting Event.
I'm blown away by everyones images! I bought a Nikon 300 F2.8 in November and only used it twice. I plan on selling it as I like wildlife photography and it just seems to short. I end up using my 500mm with a crop body and still don't have enough reach at times.
It is a handy and sharp lens but figured I would sell it and put the money towards a 600mm.
D750 + 300 2.8 AF-S (circa 2000ish)
My first test with this lens, just got it.
Wide open it seems to have ~18-24" tack sharp DoF @ 75' then everything is obliterated. Nicest lens I've ever owned.

That's fantastic use of the lens. Great use of DOF.
Thanks so much. I'll probably stick with the 85 1.4D for full length portraits like this as working from 75' with lighting is maybe a little too disconnected for me. For headshots and baseball though it's going to be amazing.
