I'm loving this lens, also some excellent shots shared on here . Having had the VR1 a couple of weeks now I'm thinking of picking a TC-17e ii up on Saturday just to give that extra reach when needed.
For those thats tried the 300mm 2.8 + TC-17e and 200-500 how do you find they compare especially at longer distances ? Because I already have the 80-400G I was thinking of the TC rather than getting another lens. Because this is a hobby I can't really go for a 500mm prime too, my other half would skin me

I had the 200-500, went through two copies. It's good, and it is affordable.
However, I have had better luck with the 300 f2.8 with and without converters (1.4 and 2) than with just the 200-500.
Experts can test and compare the two and give you objective data concerning the 1.7 TC. I can't. For me, the zoom didn't perform as well on a monopod and wasn't as comfortable on a tripod as the 300, and that was what prompted the move to the more expensive prime.
Thanks for that ,much appreciated . To be honest I value opinions from people that's tried the lenses over controlled test data . I use the 300mm range a lot but also finding the need for extra reach with some birds
Poor lighting again yesterday, getting sick of the dark clouds every weekend here . D500 300mm f2.8 VR1 + TC-17e f6.3 ISO2000 cropped. I'd be struggling with the 80-400G , AF is fine with the D500 but the images of small birds under low light not so good with the 80-400G, still tempted by a 200-500 but not sure if it would offer better than what I'm using ? zoom is handy walking around forests , in the open fixed length is fine
Whilst cleaning my second hand 300mm VR1 I checked the drop in filter holder and noticed it had a NC filter attached . It had a little dust on it so I used the rocket blower to get rid of it. Anyway I noticed the glass seems to have a slight grey tint to it, is this normal for a standard supplied filter for this lens ?
