wish I had a proper ruler. BTW, selling my commlite if anyone interested, was looking to get 80 shipped for it. Great looking adapter, well made (even better than the viltrox ii), but not happy that lens information is not given. Exif is otherwise fine.

Thanks for the measurement, it looks like the Novoflex tripod collar will work. The going rate for these new is down around $85 shipped, even lower from a couple of places.

I have read that for the Commlite adapter and other smart adapters to communicate properly, it must be removed from the camera with the camera off, the lens placed on the adapter, the adapter mounted back to the camera, the camera turned back on, then cross your fingers. Is that really how it works in practice, because I also saw videos where this protocol was not followed, with no problems. What is the real world use like?

wow, ok, I'll have to readjust my price when it's time to sell. I recall buying for quite a bit higher from amazon.

the mount works fine, everything works properly, but the lens information is not displayed in lightroom, and that bothered me enought to switch to viltrox, which works even though it's not model specific. Commlite is definitely higher quality than viltrox, weighs a bit more as well. Has felt lining towards the rear of the mount, and the opening is actually WIDER than viltrox... If only I could get over the no lens report in lightroom, I'de definitely keep the commlite instead.

I'm so used to having zero exif with alt. stuff on Canon that lack of lens data will not bother me.

My plan is to get this adapter and ASTAT-NEX collar, play with it on my wife's NEX to get comfortable with it and work out any bugs, then buy an A7r cheap next spring unless some new Sony comes along that is simply irresistible. Solid and convenient tripod mount is important to me, and I hope this works, I'll report back when the stuff gets here. From reading, it sounds ideal, except for longer focal lengths where the body and lens need to be locked down and together.

that looks like a nice collar, but I wouldnt spend that much for one. I'de much rather put a plate under the mount than pay for something that expensive. You can get a knockoff L bracket for $20 on ebay, that ASTAT seems excessive!

either commlite or viltrox have a 1/4 tripod mount on the bottom of their mount. If you're going to spend that much, look to see if the Hejnar L bracket will fit, makes a whole lot more sense.

FWIW, I had no issues with the 16-35F4 on the A7r + cheapo L bracket. I guess some folks might be scared that it's too big of a lens, I just didnt have any issues and didnt want to complicate things.

There are other 59mm collars out there- for some FD mount lenses, for instance, that I will look high and low for. I agree that the ASTAT is expensive (though available for around $135 from off shore), but given that it does away with the reportedly shaky foot on the Commlite, includes Arca Swiss compatible foot and includes functionality that I actually prefer to an L bracket, I might be OK with spending that much. I have time to look for cheaper options though. It is a slick solution though, and by all reports very solid.

Just a few observations regarding the Commlite adapter I bought to use on my wife's NEX 5n and to try on a rental A7r. These observations are from use on the NEX 5n.

The adapter is well built, heavier than I thought, and the fit front and rear are good. The tripod foot, however, is very poorly thought out and wobbly no matter what. The rubber "feet" can be removed and it can be shimmed to work well, but it is not a good solution for tripod mounting as shipped.

I had no issues with the camera locking up with any lens I tried, or with any settings I tried.

The directions say you must mount the lens to the adapter, then mount the adapter to the body, then turn on the body. This is not the case with most lenses, and hot swapping lenses worked fine for most, as does the MF/AF switch.

Lenses that I own that work fine, AF and aperture:

Canon 16-35 f/4L IS, Pancake 40mm (no MF by wire), 85/1.8, 100/2.8 macro, 135L, 28-135 cheapo zoom, ancient 24/2.8.
Sigma 14/2.8, 50/2.8 macro.
Tokina 17/3.5 1st version

It worked fine with a pretty good variety of new and old Canon and 3rd party lenses.

Lenses with issues:

Canon 200mm f/2.8 L version 1. Works perfectly sometimes, but only about 1 out of 6 times I mount it to the camera. AF and aperture, manual focus w/aperture control all CAN work and DO work reliably if the camera sees the lens from the start.
Canon 50/1.8 version 1, camera does not see this lens
Voigtlander 90/3.5 EF mount, camera does not see this lens
Zeiss 21/2.8 EF mount, camera does not see.

EDIT: I have rented an A7r for the week, and the Voigtlander 90/3.5 and Zeiss 21/2.8 work without any issues on the Commlite adapter on the A7r, for aperture control. The older Canon 200/2.8L is still iffy.

AF actually works faster than I expected, though it is highly lens dependent- 85/1.8 very quick, macros quite slow, as on a Canon body, but slower.

Do the Voigtlander and Zeiss ZE lenses work on any of the other cheap adapters? This will work very well for what I want it to do otherwise.

EDIT: IS worked on the only 2 lenses I have with IS

The Novoflex ASTAT - NEX collar does not have an Arca Swiss compatible foot. I had to add an RRS plate to mine in order to use it on any of my tripod heads.

It is very solid, but won't fit on an A7 body they way it comes from the factory; you have to remove the base plate and reverse it and then flip the long screw handle from top to bottom in order to clear the A7 hand grip or access the lens release button.

^^Thanks for clearing that up^^, I thought I read that the Arca Swiss foot was included. I had read about having to flip the base/screw to have normal access to the grip.
Does the ASTAT fit these smart adapters? Looking at the cylindrical portion of this Commlite, there is only about a 6mm band of 59mm cylindrical section to clamp to. How thick front to back is the collar?

Strange- I just checked the B&H site, and it says and shows an Arca Swiss foot on the ASTAT-NEX collar. If I do get one, I'll be sure to check if the current version is as described.
EDIT I have seen complaints that it does not fit the RRS QR clamps.

My Commlite adapter I bought used works fine on my Voigtlander 90/3.5 APO in EF mount. It also works on my Sigma 400/5.6 APO macro lens, I like it for its compatibility and build quality, but hate it for its light reflections. It is the worst of three adapters I have tried. My first no-name brand one was very good (had the back end square flocked from the factory), but the Commlite has no flocking and minimal light catching ridges on the insides. When I first got it, I tested it with my Zuiko 35/2.8 shift. There was a bright blog and huge loss in contrast. I have since flocked the entire inside and now it performs excellent.

Is there any special voodoo or mounting order that you use to get yours to work with the Voigtlander and Zeiss ZE lenses?

You are right, the flocking situation is something I will address. The internal plastic is only somewhat matte and no ribbing.

I have a Commlite adapter which works well with newer Canon and Sigma lenses that I have, but I just borrowed a Canon 70-200 f/4L IS, not an ancient lens, and it will not communicate with the camera. Does anyone else with a Commlite have trouble with this lens?

And can anyone recommend one of the cheap adapters that they know WILL work with this lens?

EDIT: I rented an A7r for the week, and this lens works without issue on the Commlite adapter on this body- IS, AF and aperture.

I have the fotodoix one. It works fine for what I have tried with it. Aperture and focus work, but focus is slow...no idea if Metabones would be faster. To be fair, I am using it with EF 85/1.2L II, which focuses quite slowly on Canon bodies too. I believe the adapter was something like $100.

I have the 70-200/4 IS and it works OK with a Viltrox and another one I have with no brand name (Techart or King I think). I also have an Adolpho on the way .. advertised as having faster AF.

Thanks. After further use, the 70-200/4L IS at f/4 would occasionally work on the Commlite, but mostly not. Not sure why, the adapter is reliable with most of my Canon and Sigma lenses. Could be just an individual copy issue.

Could you report on the Adolpho when you have a chance?

EDIT: This lens without issues on the Commlite adapter on A7r. My earlier iffy experience was on a NEX 5n.
