p.4 #1 · 25 post requirement to sell.

Another message board I'm a part of requires 3 months of membership along with 300 posts. I actually do like that a lot better than the current procedure here on FM. Anyone can pay $10 for a 1 month upload/sell membership and quickly rack up a measly 25 posts if they know they're going to be scamming people for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Just saw this https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1276890/1#12183937

I like the 4 months thing.

Yeah, took a guy all of 43 minutes the other day...to post up 26 worthless replies.

I saw someone yesterday reply to an item with only 11 posts? What's that all about?

I'm sure buyers/sellers would see the 26 silly posts and decide whether the "wow", "nice" and probably many emoticon replies is indicative of a serious buyer or seller.

We need to think about using something like an Identity_verification_service

I just googled "online identity verification" and a bunch of commercial providers came up, many of which I imagine have a low cost option for small businesses with low voume.

Hi,
I've been a user for a long time but I don't post often. I was in the middle of a conversation with a member about trading a lens.

Just in the last hour, I have my PM privileges taken away from me.

I have sent dozens and dozens of PMs....many more than my number of posts.

It is frustrating that I cannot reply to the member because this new rule just removed the PM privileges I was liberally enjoying.

It will take me some time to post a bunch of posts so I can reply to them!!!!

This is exactly my problem. I've purchased on this forum before, but mostly use the POTN forum and ebay for selling items. About 3 weeks ago I decided to try out the buy and sell membership for a month. I just received a PM about a lens I'm selling and went to reply to the person and saw the 25 post warning pop up. As a paying member of buy and sell, this is very frustrating especially when I have roughly a week left on my month long subscription.

I'm all for making the place safer, but punishing current paying members seems a little silly to me. Now I guess I'll go post some random comments on some threads so that I can gain the ability to do what I thought I was already paying for.

I have been a member here for a over a year. I have bought items here and sent many PMs. I just signed up for selling privileges, paid my dues, and listed my items. I have received a PM from an interested buyer, and since I don't have 25 posts, I can't reply. I understand the need for security and fraud reduction, but I am shocked that I paid my fees and now cannot even sell my items!! This is ridiculous. I read through the user agreement before paying my fees and it said NOTHING about not being able to send PMs. What am I missing?? I realize that this is supposed to be preventing fraud, but I feel completely taken advantage of. In fact, such behavior on the part of the forums nearly feels fraudulent itself!

Can someone let me know if I have simply jumped to conclusions here. Sorry for the rant. I guess this counts as one of my posts--hopefully I can reach 25 before my subscription runs out!

I'm in the same situation -- its very frustrating. I read the forums a lot and have used the Upload and Sell membership on and off for several years (when it was free even), but I don't have 25 posts so I can't renew my membership with expired at the end of last year.

I guess the other approach is to just blast a bunch of posts in forums to get to 25...

Just chat some people up. I'm doing it right now.

I understand everyone's frustration but I've been on a lot of big forums and small forums and I work in IT. The fact is, the moderators have to deal with bots, and other entities that are trying to exploit operations like this. The 25 post limit is one of the better ways to combat this. It's a pretty normal type of thing to implement to keep people from taking advantage of an otherwise free forum to buy and sell things to a very specific target market.

As a new member who found an uncommon piece of gear that I would very much like to purchase, the 25 post restriction is a huge bummer. I'm not a scammer and I'd love to send my money to the seller tonight, but there's no way for me to contact them. Not the best way to help people sell their gear, as I'm sure that many people find this forum, as I did, but searching for gear that they are looking to purchase.

We should talk this out. BTW, I found I was able to PM people from the classifieds but not PM from the PM interface.

In other words, under 25 posts I could send the PM by clicking on the PM link in the add under the users name. To reply to that users I'd have to initiate another PM from there.

Having said that I just put my 2 cents in on some posts and got to 25. It's a forum.

As far as you not being scammer. You know you aren't a scammer. Just like if the police pull you over you know you are an upstanding citizen. But The forum admin's don't know that, just like a cop pulling someone over is always trying to protect himself against getting shot. It's the sad truth of the world we live in. A small number of people ruin it for the honest people. That's why we all have to take our shoes off at the airport now. It sucks but I don't know how to do it better.

Bill,

There are almost 275,000 FM members, of which, about 5,000 are signed in and online as I type this. Those are pretty good numbers for a photography forum. If a seller has had an item listed since October 1, 2013 and it hasn't sold as of April 9, 2014, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that there is a reason it hasn't sold by now (assuming that the listing has been kept up-to-date, which, considering the age, I don't think is likely), and that the reason is probably not that there aren't enough members who would buy what he's selling. Regardless, the example you give is an outlier and is clearly not indicative of the norm. Nothing against new members- because we were all new at one point- but the B/S board isn't all of a sudden going to become much better if there was unfettered access for everyone. Coincidence or not, there have been no new threads of scams by members with no history since the new requirements went into effect.

I hope I'm not coming across as being arrogant or mean in any way, because that's not my intent. However, haven't we now seen enough posts that sound like complaints and/or resentment against the new requirements? The new requirements weren't designed to single any one person out- and they certainly aren't meant to imply that any particular person is a scammer or otherwise untrustworthy person. As has been pointed out, this is not the first site to implement such steps as part of a comprehensive fraud deterrence effort. For those members who have ideas on how to improve the system, PM Fred with your suggestions. These recent changes were partly born out of suggestions from members, so it is clear that Fred is willing to listen and try things that he hasn't done before. I'd think that is a more productive use of time than complaining in a thread.

I'll now step down from my soap box . If I didn't say it before, I'll say it now to all the new members: "Welcome to FM- the BEST photography forum (not just B/S board ) for photographers on the 'net!"...Show more →

Nice epistle Mitesh. And I mean epistle in the dictionary form as to eloquence with a point. Your points are all valid and simple to understand...to most here.
Fred initiated the rules for a reason that us "lifers" and those members before the rule(s) were installed are VERY aware of!!!!
As I stated before, the pain of the rules will not get you the gains you are looking for. At least not on FM B&S.

It is sort of like obtaining a driver's learners permit(here in the USA anyway).....you get most of the priviledges of driving but not all. There is a time period you must adhere to, restrictions, then you get your full driver's license. No learners permit or required drivers instruction certification, then no full driver's license!!! Short and simple!!!!

If you are interested in photography, the rules are of no consequence. You sell/ buy fair, like in kind is returned! New or not!

IF you are new and your item is not selling and you think it is because of being new, go "outside the box" and communicate with anyone interested or in your ad. Maybe you have to pay a bit for 'EBT' or whatever to insure your worthiness. The rewards will be bountiful in the feedback you receive, even if it is the first sale or buy!
What is worth to you?
Your interest in photography should map you thru the different forums and comment on the images you feel are worthy of comments. I am sure the 25 post requirement will be gone in a few days.

Now Mitesh, I would add, don't put that soap box away too soon. ..you, Will, AnthonyS..and others are the voice of reason here!
Dan

Nice Dan and Mitesh! Going outside the "9 dots" has success many times. Few want to do it here. You, Dan, did it for a "newbie" like me with zero feedback. We talked. We had a beer..and became fast friends for many years.
So from a newbie on my 1st sale be it large or small...take the extra step to COMMUNICATE. Granted I had only a few items to buy/sell but heh who knows what will be next!

Very well said guys. To that point. If you want to anonymously buy and sell gear with out anyone knowing who you are, there are plenty of places to do that already. I have used CL and eBay many times over the years for buying and selling.

I couldn't figure this out, so maybe it's been patched.

Well, either this rule has prevented a sale by the guy who has had the listing up for 6 weeks, or it has prevented me from making an impulse buy. I'm not really in that much of a hurry to buy so I'll abide by the rules. And I might as well start using the critique forums.

Same restriction seems to apply for buying. I'm a newbie - signed up because I'm looking for a specific piece of equipment. Google led me to this board where a member is offering it to sell. But I couldn't post a response, send the member a private message or even find a link to the member's email address. The equipment is still for sale. Hopefully, by the time I reach 25 messages, it still will be there.
