I almost find it a little overwhelming to even consider posting in this thread but nonetheless here I am.
I am definitely what you all consider a "newbie" to the forum, in terms of membership anyway. I've followed and sifted through topics here for years now and finally decided it was in my best interest to get over the internet equivalency of anti-social behaviour and I have no doubt it will progress my own ability. (Given the vast amount of talent and shear honesty around)
IMHO I think the post requirements are definitely a good idea and, really, 25 posts are a drop in the bucket considering the volume of threads there are to take part in. Safeguards online should be top notch/priority when it comes to the infamous "buy & sell" world.
Aaaanyway, with that being said here is to post #1! ! Cheers!
I would like to see a minimum of a couple of hundred posts AND six months time required before new members can post to the Buy & Sell OR contact members with items listed for sale (or wanted).
There are too many scammers signing up, sometimes with multiple accounts, just to access the buy and sell forum lately.
That's about right. It should be time based, not just based on the number of posts. I would do a search on the member's posts to see it they contributed any meaningful conversations to the forums, rather than joined only to buy or sell.
Well, not going to lie, I'm just here for the B&S.
It seems here people actually take care of their stuff as opposed to some of the dirty pro cameras of unknown history that's all over ebay..
I found this post helpful and understand why. I found a amazing deal on a 1DX but need to sale some of my gear quickly but will just wait it out and not rush.

Somehow there's a corollary between 25 posts to Buy and Sell and all those who claimed to have read Playboy magazine for its interesting articles.
Clearly, this thread has become the PERFECT place for newbies to talk with one another about nothing while building their post count.
Good luck guys. But remember this place is SO MUCH MORE than a Buy and Sell forum. Think about pursuing what interests you in the presentation and gear forums. Great folks hang out here.

That's unfortunate. Unless your shots are better than 95% of the posters on a given
presentation board, you have things to learn. Folks here are willing to help to get your
game to the next level, one should take advantage of the participating talent. Been at
this for over 45 years and I learn something new everyday here. Your loss.
I have always loved photography but had never used anything other than a point-and-shoot. About 6 months ago, my wife purchased for me a SLR for my 40th and my "hobby" really exploded. I started reading everything I could find on the web, and most recently, joined this web site having read about it from others.
There a lot of folks here who I would consider great photographers, and there is much for me to learn. However, I do find posting here a little intimidating given the level of experience most seem to have. Perhaps this is not the right place for me as a newbie as there does not appear to be any "general forums" for those of us with more basic questions.
I certainly understand the desire to keep scammers etc. out so I completely understand the rules that are set here. I am happy to follow these rules, as it seems like there is a good community of folks here. I have to admit though, there is certainly some drool worthy pieces of equipment that I see on the B&S forums that I can't wait to be able to participate in the buying side of things!
OK, newbie here, as you can see by my post count. I have however been lurking around here for several months. Finally registered when I saw a WTB ad. Was not able to post in the thread, nor PM the user without the 25 post minimum. It takes a while to hit 25 posts without spamming the threads, which I will not do as it's not productive IMHO.
That being said, I was able to contact the buyer (nvrupnvrin) via their website, and the grip was mailed on Monday. They're wanting to give feedback on the sale, but can't until I have the minimum number of posts. Any way to have feedback provided before the 25 post minimum? Shot in the dark, but figure it's worth asking.
I understand the rationale with the 25 post minimum, but there are honest people out here who just don't want to post a lot, but do want to enjoy the for sale forums.
None that I'm aware of beyond what you've noted above in your post. Just for comparative purposes to give you an idea about how lenient Fred is with his posting requirement, www.nikoncafe.com requires 6 months of membership AND 300 meaningful posts before one can even SEE their market place. Glad it worked out for you that you were able to get the item you wanted.

+1. I've been saying this for months but didn't really see anyone else with a similar opinion...'til now.
Fred,
Before you take Jim8EL and Molson's advice...please give me time to make 19 more posts.
I have been registered at NikonCafe for over a year, and think I only have maybe a dozen posts. I gave up on trying to get into their marketplace a long time back.
I understand that newbies might be an annoyance to long time members and that these are afraid of scammers. So am I.
I consider myself absolutely new to FM and also to posting and talking about photography. Nonetheless, I am not new to photography, can fairly c&c and would love to get feedback on some of my own work. Sooner or later I will have the 25 posts together to move up the ladder.
However, I signed up for FM to acquire some knowledge about a certain camera and see the FS offers. I joined FM based on a recommendation of another long time FM member whom I met in real world at a photography class.
The issue is not the number of posts but the credibility and trustworthiness of a new member. Perhaps one simple addition to the site could be "join by invite"; so long term members can invite a mentee, they could share their passion, knowledge and work and mentor a new member.
Please join me in this effort to validate a new member by "invitation via email" and +1 if you like this feature request.
jester4176 and mfeweb, new members like you two are what FM needs. The 25-rule causes inconvenience to real newbies, and does not stop scammers. It also encourages a race-to-25 behavior that is filling the forum with junk postings. As a oldtimer, I can smell that kind of post without even looking at the poster's count. I second the "join by invite" approach, and then the 25-rule can be eliminated.
