p.3 #2 · Nikon Service Advisory: D600 shutter replacement
Can't imagine the flood of D600's that are being sent there. Wonder how long the turnaround time will be. I'm thinking I send it in today or wait a while.

Interesting news. I'll send mine in here in a few weeks, hopefully after the mad rush has died back a little. I haven't really noticed any more sensor gunk on my D600 than my D800, but I shoot outdoors a good deal and I change lenses quite a bit, so they both need cleaning pretty frequently. So truth be told, I don't know if my D600 exhibits the dreaded flaw (I bought it refurb'd so it's possible the shutter has already been replaced), but I'll send it in anyway in case I want to sell it down the road.
If you're comfortable with not having a full warranty (grey market), I'd suggest looking at refurbished models. Roberts has occasionally run refurb'd D600's for $1299, which is a hell of a deal for a full frame camera. Plus you get a 90-Day factory warranty, another 90-days from Roberts, and no questions about whether NikonUSA will replace the shutter.
If you haven't had to wet clean your D600 sensor, than yours didn't have the problem. With the oil splatter it wasn't getting cleaned by just dry cleaning.

Yeah, class actions always protect consumers, and benefit the lawyers too, of course. Some people think class action is stupid/ useless, unfortunately.

I'm hoping that this will force them to stop with the nonsensical "impact damage" claims. That's is another real PR/legal disaster waiting to happen. (especially because once they claim impact damage, they void the warranty!)

Hmmm... I just bought a used, low usage one that I was told had the service done already. I don't see any spots but I haven't shot too much with it yet.

I wonder if it'd be worth sending in anyways?
Pound out 1000 or more frames out of it first. If you don't see any issues I wouldn't put it in. There is a time frame involved with this service recall. But sending in a perfectly good working serviced camera to get serviced again doesn't guarantee the 2nd servicing won't break something else down the road.

Jim
Jim,
I've wet cleaned it once, but I wet cleaned my D800 once in the same time frame, so like I said there may have been some oil on the sensor, but it didn't stand out any more than the other sticky crud that gets stuck on my other sensors. Who knows. I'll send it in eventually if for no other reason than to be able to provide a buyer with proof of service when I sell.

I just sent mine for the second time, the first time they replaced the shutter and general cleaning, I paid around $40 for shipping and insurance! About 3K shots later again I have the spots. I am not sure this time what are they going to replace. I hope it won't take too long, at least I didn't have to pay for the shipping.
Keep my fingers crossed.
Ahhh, the largesse of Nikon that it would offer "free service." Put their freaking toes to the fire. Hell, even if these lawsuits go nowhere, perhaps it will give impetus to generating a suit on "impact damage."

I'd just send it in.
Bubble wrap it. Keep the box at home.
If it's a world-wide recall they will fix any and all shutters.
If it were localized (USA only) and at the discretion of Nikon USA, then you might be out of luck. But it doesn't sound like that's the case.
A word to the wise, way back on the D70 BLOD recall, I packed it in bubble wrap as you described and sent it to Nikon in NY. They opened it by slicing with a utility knife, leaving a slice mark in the base of my camera. You may wish to try something else, or, you may be luckier.

Dumped mine after I sent it to Nikon twice and they sent it back worse then ever. I don't think
they ever even touched it! They had my camera for the first two months I owned it. These people
have no integrity whatsoever. I just love those Nikon fanboy jerks who said people didn't know how to clean their
sensors! The only reason Nikon made this fix was the bad publicity on websites like this! I think we all owe a dept of gratitude
to Roger for all his great posts, both here and on DPR,documenting the truth of the defect!

Well, it's about time. I have to say I still feel Nikon has a damn fine camera system, but they are wayy late to the punch with this service advisory. In the last year and half, Nikon has lost photographers to Canon, Sony and others due to this issue. On top of that, they released the D610, which seemed to be a D600 fix without officially acknowledging a problem.
p.3 #19 · Nikon Service Advisory: D600 shutter replacement
I've returned to Nikon exclusively to use the MF lenses, the sale of my prior collection of which I still (expensively) regret and with my collection of F bodies, I don't sweat the issue of the crap on the sensor assembly. I have the D7100 exclusively to test the integrity of MF lenses I buy from folks so I can give them quicker feedback about how well my purchase performs. Hard to beat the F6 D:
