"The solution: Nikon is making available to all owners of D600 cameras (even if Nikon’s product warranty has expired) this customer-service measure, which includes the inspection, cleaning and replacement of the shutter assembly and related parts of your camera, FREE OF CHARGE as well as the cost of shipping D600 cameras to Nikon and their return to customers. Once again, please understand that regardless of this service, your D600 camera as is the case with all D-SLR cameras, will continue to require normal periodic sensor cleanings."

Yeah, look like this is a recall. I contacted Nikon and they gave me prepaid shipping label, and said that service will be free of charge even though my warranty expired in January. Just like the information from the website.
Thanks for the link!

My D600 does not exhibit the issue, but I wonder if they are doing the same for Canadians. The announcement is only from Nikon USA as far as I can tell.

That is great news! For whatever the reason, it's great that Nikon is going to do this. I didn't notice, was there a deadline to have the service done?

My guess:
- They needed to make changes to the shutter design to fix the problem or await a supplier fix (i.e. was not a simple correction they could make in-house)
- Release of D610 was with revised shutter to ensure no issues in the field (obviously, not the only reason for the release, but they did this prior to issuing a field advisory so they knew the fix was an actual fix). Easier to recall a small batch of a new product than to wholesale replace D600 shutters and find out there's still a problem.
- Field tested shutters passed, time to replace everyone else's.
