+1 @ WA's (especially for distortion) for the Oly's.
18/3.5
21/3.5
24/2.8 (x2)
28/3.5
My C/Y lineup stops at 28mm (C/Y 28/2.8) and my Oly's take over from there (and the TS-E II). I've not treated myself to an Oly macro yet, but I'm quite aware of them.

I had a 40/2 as well, and just like you I parted with it because the hype and my perceived value of that lens just didn't line up at all. They go for as much as 50/2 macros and 55/1.2s, both lenses I like better. Actually I bought my 50/1.2 for LESS than I sold my 40/2 for. That is just bonkers.
One thing I havent seen much of lately is the Oly super teles. I wonder if theyre being kept hidden by collectors or what. I bet the 250/2 is insane on the A7r.

The 250/2 is going for something like $6,500 on fleabay right now... I'm thinking that I'll go FD for tele's. A mint 300mm f/2.8 Canon L FD is around $1500 right now.

so far, I'd have to agree that the OM glass is pretty darn sweet.
You may find that some OM glass is a bit lower contrast than some other, higher contrast glass, so they can benefit from a slightly different pp protocol, but they still tend to play pretty nice in post (or jpg settings). Not a problem, per se ... just something to be aware of as you learn the nuance of Oly glass / Oly color. Probably a bit more noticeable in soft light than specular.

The 40/2 is a nice lens, I liked it, but not at the price/value. I think it would be a nice lens at say $150 or $200 but they are uncommon enough that that will likely never happen. The air-spaced design is pretty unique. I think there were about 5-7k of them made, based on what I recall re: serial numbers, so they are not *that* rare, but of course there's fetishism and hoarding at play too. ;-) Back when the OM line was getting closed out they were getting sold/closed out by B&H and others at < $100 , I seem to recall.
They actually go for more than any of the OM 50s in some cases. I think I sold mine (which was as-new, and had original box) for $650 a couple years ago. Interestingly the buyer was Mike Johnston of TOP.
The super Teles are a lot more rare (the 250/2, 350/2.8, etc.) But, unlike the wides, I don't find them as world-beaters in comparison. Even the Canon L teles of the day are/were better, I think. Mostly due to Canon using fluorite. There are collectors that keep them, yes. but they change hands sometimes. Still, I'd not bother chasing them, not only are they overpriced due to scarcity, but the Canon L glass (FD or EF) is better in every case I have seen.

Are you sure that a hood is included? There wasn't one in the box...
I'm not certain on that lens - but on the other hand, are you sure the lens is "new"? They've been out of production for close to 20 years now, so the chances of finding one in a box that's never been opened is somewhat remote...

I just got 3 Olys to use on my A7R. The one that surprised me is the 50 f:1.4, because I find it, so far, quite hard to use. Focus throw is limited, so finding accurate focus, using full magnification, remains iffy, even on stationary targets. Results are very pleasing when proper focus is achieved though.
Also, wide open performance is quite soft across the whole picture, and best performance seems to be around f:2.8-f:4.0
Short distance performance is very strong. Colors are very nice indeed. Micro-contrast is less than Zeiss, even a bit less than Leica, which is fine by me.
Lastly, it is hugely susceptible to flare, even from indirect sunlight.
Is that par for the course? BTW, serial n° is above 1M...

Zuiko 18mm f3.5 on the Sony A7R.
So far my biggest disappointment with the A7R is the terrible EVF. This image was shot on a cloudy-bright partially overcast day, and because of the EVF's severely limited dynamic range, the upper half of the tower was completely invisible in the viewfinder. I switched the brightness to manual and set it as high as it would go, to no avail. The only way I could frame the image was to set the focus peaking to medium or high so it would show an outline of the tower once it was in focus.

Decided to give up on the 21mm, that after using it just once. I need something widerfor my commercial work (though it was fine for people work as per above) and thinking of the (gulp) 18mm Zeiss. The Nikon 14-24 is better and the same price but it's a huge monster and I need to be able to use a polariser. If anyone wants the 21mm f3.5 MC boxed in only used once condition or a Novoflex OM adaptor also only mounted once, let me know. I'll have them on the B&S board here soon.

Ah, wish I'd known Beni, I'm just up the road from you in Preston...and bought one 2 weeks ago!!
For interest, what were you asking, it may be worth my getting to compare and selling on the one I like least, I always try to do that.
Mine is also a fairly late MC version Ser No. 1197** The late style when MC was no longer stated on the ring.

Sorry, I can't help with the 50/1.4, just interested in what the other two Zuikos you got were?

Do you mean that there is a better EVF on the market, or just that you are unhappy with the current state of the art? Did you try both settings of Menu/Gear/2/Live View Display?
