I just got 3 Olys to use on my A7R. The one that surprised me is the 50 f:1.4, because I find it, so far, quite hard to use. Focus throw is limited, so finding accurate focus, using full magnification, remains iffy, even on stationary targets. Results are very pleasing when proper focus is achieved though.
Also, wide open performance is quite soft across the whole picture, and best performance seems to be around f:2.8-f:4.0
Short distance performance is very strong. Colors are very nice indeed. Micro-contrast is less than Zeiss, even a bit less than Leica, which is fine by me.
Lastly, it is hugely susceptible to flare, even from indirect sunlight.
Is that par for the course? BTW, serial n° is above 1M......Show more →
Yes.More or less in course with behaviour of mine 50/1.4 Olys with A7/Nexes,save huge flare susceptibility.

A 28 f:2.0, and a 28 f:3.5
I was hoping you'd say the 28/2 ;o)
How do you find it...would you care commenting in the thread I opened today on my copy of that lens, as I want to know if mine is typical or should I try another?

This turned into a great thread with lots of helpful images and information. Thanks to everyone who has contributed (and apologies in advance for a somewhat long post).
I have a number of (i.e. too many) alt lenses in Canon FD, Contax C/Y, Leica M, Leica R, Minolta MD, Konica AR, and Olympus Pen F mounts. I've never had any interest in Olympus OM lenses because the aperture ring turns in the "wrong" direction.
But I'm also a sucker for 55mm f/1.2 lenses and wanted something smaller and lighter than the Canon FD and Yashica ML variants I already have. The Olympus 55/1.2 has a mixed reputation with some users loving it and others regarding it as a rubbish lens wide open. After spending some time looking at images made with the Olympus 55/1.2 (particularly those that Makten has posted here and on Flickr), I decided to take a risk and am now waiting for the lens to arrive (figuring that the focusing direction is more important than the aperture direction).
For me, the big disappintment with the A7(R) cameras has been the poor performance of Leica M mount wide angles and this thread has provided persuasive evidence that the OM lenses offer an excellent alternative.
90% of my shooting can be done with a 35/55/85 lens set (the other 10% would require 24mm and 135mm focal lengths). Although the OM 85/2 seems to be reasonably well regarded, the OM 35mm lenses don't appear to have received much love at all in this thread. I'm interested in the OM 35/2 and am wondering if anyone has experience with this lens.

The 200/5 works quite well for a compressed landscape tele lens and is quite compact and affordable, shares the 49mm with most of my other OM glass as well.

First I'd skip the 85 and go for one of the 90 or 100 f2 lenses.
As far as the 35s go, I had a later 35/2.8, which is supposed to be better, and it's the worst prime I've ever owned. Absolute rubbish. If you insist on a 35, I hear there may have been changes to the 35/2.0 when it got the "Made in Japan" but on the front, but Ive never seen any real evidence towards those rumors. Maybe Ed Sawyer knows. Again, I'd go a bit further out of your range and get a 28.
I dont really shoot wide, but I guess my 3 lens kit analogous to yours is the 28/2, 50/2 macro and 90/2 macro. Im not sold on the 28, but I doubt Ill let the latter two go even in death.

My recently acquired copy of 35/2.8,late multicoated,"made in Japan" is actually quite good on the A7/NEX7/NEX5N and comparable to other good 35/2.8 primes from my collection.I don't see much difference between it and OM 35/2 either.

zuiko 135 is a decent lens. The 135/4.5 macro (with 65-116 extension tube for infinity usage) is probably the best in the lineup, though the 2.8 is not bad, and quite small.
re: OM 35/2 - sounds like you got a bad example... the one I have is stellar. I went through 3 of them, but all were quite good. I think one has to manage expectations too, esp. shooting wide open.
I think the 28/2 is better than the 35/2, all things considered, but the AOV is different of course. Agreed re: 50/2 macro and 90/2 macro being superb. I had a 90/2 for a long while, loved it, finally let it go and I do miss it. I still have OM: 28/2, 35/2, 50 1.8/1.4/1.2, 55/1.2, 135/4.5 macro, and probably a couple others I can't recall at the moment.
