Nice shot Edward! I have been away from alt land for awhile. Have you given up your Leica to shoot Sony or is this an add on?

Hope things stay calm in Bangkok!

Thank you very much RM! Yep, I've just recently switched to Sony after my M9 developed the dreaded sensor leprosis syndrom They will need 4-6 months to replace it for me, and not even one word of apology.

The most recent photos are all at the anti-government rallies on Silom road. Very peaceful and joyful atmosphere

Wow...I dont even know what Leprosis is, but it sounds nasty. So you will have it back in 6 months or so? That's an enormous wait. I can see why you got the Sony. I was tempted by that camera, but ended up with something else. Still, it's a nice piece of kit.

I hope Thailand can keep calm during these coming months. Will the election solve anything?

I was kidding about the leprosis. The sensor coatings are delaminating, making air bubbles all over the sensor that look like oil spots.

Elections are the problem currently and the reason for the rallies. That may sound like a contradiction but for the sake of democracy, the elections should be postponed until the election laws are reformed.

Awesome Bob. A copy of the Oly 21mm/3.5 is on its way to me now. Any suggestions on shooting and processing with this lens? Do you have any outdoor daylight shots with it? Does it handle normal skies and clouds well?

Jim -

I've been enjoying the Oly 21/3.5 and find it's sharp, easy to focus and close focusing making f/3.5 work out fine. Compared to other solutions, it's a bargain. For outdoor shots I find it handles landscapes fine, maybe requiring a but more contrast but the colors are all bright and vibrant. Attached are a broad sample of recent images some of which I have posted here previously. Note the last image . . . pointing at strong light sources can result in a red ring flare which is visible in the viewfinder most times. Sometimes the red ring flare can actually be a positive!

Bob,
Do you find it better than the Zeiss 21mm on the a7R for pure image quality (thinking landscape)? Or is it a compromise giving you a much smaller and lighter lens but maybe still not quite up to the Zeiss?

Definitely the latter Tim. The Zeiss 21 is simply best in class IMHO, but it's larger, heavier. And while the metabones version III adapter gives electronic aperture control, it adds further size. I like the Zeiss better and will use it on the a7R but on this trip, I wanted to see how satisfying it would be to travel with as small a kit as possible. While I love the Zeiss, I don't hesitate to use the Oly.

So excited to try out the lens. I was considering a CV 21mm/1.8. The images posted here with that lens look excellent - with a lot of pop. Are you referring to the Zeiss Distagon 21mm 2.8? Its also in the over-$1k range . . . so, I think I can be very happy with this Oly as a starter lens for this fov. I will post anything post-worthy . . . . thanks for the encouragement!

Yes, I was referring to that lens. I already own it for my Canon 5DIII so I don't have to invest. The question is whether I would ever sell it to reinvest in the Sony. I'm now with the a7R as close as I've ever been to selling my Canon gear but even if I do, I don't think I could sell the Zeiss 21 Distagon . . . it's that good. But the Oly is more than a starter lens and a great non-native choice for the Sony. I've been happy with it's performance. I also looked at the CV 21/1.8 and would love to get that lens. It looks like something that falls in between the Oly and the Zeiss but I have no experience with that lens other than the images here and reviews that I have read.

There is a dpreview posting about A7R+CV 21mm:

Nice lens, but vignetting/magenta casting/no filters due to the hood make OM much more usable for landscape shots...

I have both the 21mm ZE and Oly 21mm f/3.5 (SC) and while these lens are not in the same league the Oly does surprising well for just a 180g lens. My only real complaint is the CA in corners - which is easy to correct.

I'm not sure if I will keep my 21mm ZE as my current thinking is to keep Canon for wildlife/long lens and Sony for landscape/city/travel. Not to mention that the 21 ZE is 720 grams - not including adapter! However in my thinking the Oly 21mm buys time to consider what will come our way in native mount.

I mean my strategy has always been if I dont love it I sell it.

it always works out in the end, even if it not in the immediate future.

I once had a nice lamy 2000 which I sold to buy a pelikan. didnt like the lamy, HATED the pelikan. then I sold the pelikan and bought another pen and I did this two or three times until I ended up with my first stub Parker 51. it took a while, and I probably spent 50% of the pen on paypal fees and shipping but at least I had context for what I ended up with and had no desire to sell it for something else.

Ive done the same with lenses; there will always be another to buy if you really want.

That is a difficult decision to make. My problem is I would keep/want them both.

that's exactly my worry as well. I want both Like the voigt quite a bit for close-mid distances. Like they say, kit building is forever.
