@AGeoJO@ - it happens Joshua, but hanging clouds are way better than clear sky in that location.
When we visited in 2016, it was raining the day before, which screwed up my nearby shooting as well. This may give you the opportunity to revisit. Just check Douglas Liu's notes from his trip to Zhangjiajie.
Hi Jack, the weather conditions are indeed beyond our control. Too bad... 😜. Yes, I am aware of Doug's posts from Zhangjiajie. Quietly, I am planning of going back there next year. We will see whether I can still pull that trip off...
A similar shot from the same location as that of Jack on the previous page. It was pouring and I composed that shot hastily and I didn't realize that there was a cascading water fall on the left of that until I actually reviewed the image way later on...

Stunning, Hatch! I love the graphicness with the birds silhouetted and of course the misty layers. Get that one up on your wall 😎
Many thanks. We had a couple mornings where the fog was dense and of course, eventually burned off. It made for some fun shots to capture. Glad you like the shot and thanks again.

@AGeoJO - Often weather is the luck of the draw. I had the same experience in Guilin where it was pouring so badly that even cormorants didn't want to get wet.
Again, three weeks ago it was raining for couple days before we arrived in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan, but on the day of shooting I got great blue sky.

I have not been to that park of the park, Joshua. I like the foggy look, beats blue sky IMHO. I am well past the age for climbing these steps. I believe they have an escalator for that? I don't remember if you also went to "Fenghuanggucheng" (Ancient Phoenix City) not too far from Zhangjiajie. If you haven't, I recommend spending one day and one night there. Very charming old streets and houses. I am not a fan of the loud music from bars and Las Vegas-like colorful lights at night, it ruins the charm of the old town. There are many girls/ladies dressed in those shiny colorful ethnic costumes walking around on the streets, they are mostly Han Chinese dressing in ethnic costumes to have their pictures taken. Renting those costumes is a big business in the city. There are also photo tours to nearby ethnic villages to photograph old ladies and men dressed in their traditional cloths, "doing" stuff like, weaving with old textile tools, making traditional crafts, smoking water pipe. They are obviously paid by the tours to do the show, maybe interesting to see but I have never been on one of these photo tours. I may go to both Zhangjiajie and Mt. Huangshan nest year with my daughter and her husband, really amazing places for landscape photography.

Doug, that shot was taken from the foot of the mountains. Our car parked maybe a few hundred meters behind me there. It was signicantly foggier further up to a point that the visibility was really poor, let alone to take decent images. I am not a fan of blue skies in my shots either but the fog was simply too thick further up the mountains. Yes, those are 999 steps and yes, there are escalators on the right side for a fee that we gladly paid.
I will keep your suggestion in mind to go to that Ancient Phoenix City if, and that is a big if, I go back thee. Yes, I have seeen a lot of girls pretty much all over that rent traditional costumes and have their pictures taken and pay some local photographers for their images. More than a few times, I did take pictures of some girls and sent those to them for free, of course. Here is one of them although it seems to be too glitzy for a traditional costume.

Yeah, like glitzy Las Vegas. Like most other old towns in China, they hang too many red lanterns too! It loses the "zen" feel, IMHO.
Here is my version of the town in evening. I think they turn off the lights after 10:30 or something. The girls in the costumes dressed like that to have their photo taken. Funny thing is, some of them weren't even wearing the local ethnic groups' traditional costumes, some costumes looked like styles from Tang Dynasty, Song Dynasty or Ming Dynasty, or traditional Chinese operas costumes.
#3-5 are definitely not the costumes of the local ethnic groups. The costumes in #6-8 look like something the local ethnic groups may wear for occasions like wedding or something like that. Again, I am 99.99% sure the girls in those pictures are Han Chinese, not the real local ethnic folks.
