The bird population changes with the seasons and over the years quite a bit. If I add up all the different bird species I have taken pictures of since 2007 in our back yard, I end up with a number of over 60. However, at any given time I only notice about one or two handful. The Merlin Bird ID from Cornell University seems to identify a few more species that stay well hidden and I don’t have photos of.
Pretty soon now the hummingbirds and Turkey Vultures head south. Then the Sandhill cranes migrate overhead in late October and early November. Also, if It gets really cold and snowy in the winter then sometimes local birds move from the higher mountain elevations down to us here at around 6 or 7 thousand feet.
