Hi All - I've been watching this thread for sometime, and the quality of the images is extraordinary. I've just been commenting or asking a question from time to time, as I'm a long time OM-D user. I've been undecided about stepping up to an A7R for some time, but yesterday finally got my hands on one to try with several manual focus primes I have, mostly FD but also a Nikkor 35 PC and CV Apo Lanthar 180- see below taken with an FD 35 f/2.
Overall, results certainly confirmed for me the gains that are on offer. My only quandary is A7 vs A7R? I mostly shoot deliberate landscapes, often on a tripod, but also do some macro, where the electronic first curtain of the A7 might come in handy? To help me through this dilemma, I wondered if anyone could point me to an A7 full frame raw image, preferably a landscape shot, taken on a tripod and using an FD 50 1/4 at around f/8 - I'm interested to see what the detail difference is between the A7 and the A7R given their difference in pixels and AA-filter.
And I would welcome any experience-based comments on the value of electronic first curtain for closeup with flash.
Here's one from yesterday shot in the gardens here in Hamilton (NZ) - just discovered I need to join to post in directly.
If you plan to have bright light sources (i.e., the sun or street lights at night) the A7R is the way to go as it has far far fewer sensor reflections than the A7. My A7R sensor behaves exactly as my D800 sensor (though every so slightly sharper due to the lack of AA filter).
Just wondering, is that with a PP or SOOC ? I'm thinking of getting the 55mm 1.8 and have been hearing good things about it. What's your experience?
Also have you taken it out during night time for handheld shooting at 1.8 ?
Thanks!
I am probably not the best person to ask because I have only had this camera and the lens for a couple of weeks.
From my perspective I am only interested in native A7/r lenses with autofocus. I was initially rather reluctant to buy this lens as US$900 for a 55 f1.8 is very pricey but from the very first shot I took from it, I was 'wow'. It is super sharp even wide open - the only lens I have that compares to it is the Nocticron 42.5 f1.2 for my EM1. Once you see how sharp and how well it renders, you are likely to be fairly comfortable with the price. If you want native autofocus lenses for this camera I would say it is a 'must have'.
This shot isnt one of my best. I am still playing around with the autofocus modes and had it on wide/multi-point. I wont be using that mode again in a hurry. So this shot missed hitting focus on the cats face. It is pretty much straight out of camera - I did increase exposure as I under exposed because the brightest point was the sun on the cats face and I didnt want to blow the highlight - I reduced the highlights somewhat too.

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it. Well at the moment I'm using canon EF 50mm 1.4 and I'm thinking of selling it and changing it to the 55mm and there's some cash back promotion happening in Sydney at the moment. Thought its a good time to get them.
Thank you both! Werner, sorry to hear about your summer. Here we have had unusually good weather - too dry and hot actually, so this is most welcome. Plus, I had missed the clouds.
Btw. in a previous post I expressed some doubts about the camera, but I am starting to warm up to it.
Peire, Derek, and Ronny...as always, fantastic images!!
Some more shots from Hawaii...various lenses, and some processed with Snapseed on my iPhone 5s and all transferred via the Sony wifi app to said phone!
