Another very lovely set of images, Helena! I wonder what aperture did you use on that lens to get that sunstar in the 2nd image? Again, it is more the person behind the camera rather than the photography gear…
The Canyon Towhee scratches the ground vigorously to uncover seeds buried in the dust. Here is an example.
Now a short GIF animation of its activity.
Near the beginning of the video sequence the bird jumps back, then forward and then back again, scratching the ground. The first backward jump is captured in the following 2 images.
The second backward jump is captured in the following 4 images.
Another image from Deadvlei or (Dead Marsh). It was once a marsh surrounded by sand dunes and it collected sufficient rain water for trees to grow and to even proliferate. Several hundred years ago due to changing climate conditions, water dwindled and the marsh became dry. The trees died but due to the arid conditions, the trees didn’t rot but turned almost black. The dry lake bed is light of color due to the high salt content.
