thanks! i have been stuck to the couch with my leg raised up while i recover from surgery since i got the lens so i haven't had a chance to get a feel for the lens. no chance for stopped down landscape type shots yet. i got the bird shot sticking the camera in on a tripod (horror of horrors) and using my phone as a remote while i rock the baby.
what kind of field curvature is it that you see with the ZF, typical zeiss outward U? pointing the camera out the window from the couch and using maximum LV magnification the extreme corners on mine seem to be hitting infinity at the same distance as the center (though there appears to be a bit of left right offset that disappears by f/5.6).
i got this lens expecting more similar performance to c/y than the ZF/ZE, e.g. better close up performance with less SA at the expense of infinity performance. also, i really wanted the metal focus ring that turns the right way and an aperture ring. as a bonus it turns out to be quite small (smaller than the 55/1.8 i think with adapter) and well built.
I'm sorry to hear about the surgery. I wish you a speedy recovery.
The field curvature of the 50/1.4 ZF/ZE is like an upside down U, meaning that the plane of focus goes from the bottom corners to the distant center. Annoying. On the 5DII I could stop it down to f5.6 and get a whole scene in focus. Not so on the A7. It's still useful though and I still really like how the lens draws at f2.8. Sharp with very nice low contrast bokeh that never looks harsh. Something I can't say about the 55 FE.

That's a lovely series Gregg but I think the best shot is of your wife - the mask really matches her eyes. I'd just PP out the red band bottom left and then print it !
Wrapping the images taken on my recent trip to Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. Heart felt thanks to all who hit the like button on those pix! All with A7.
#1 Sol Duc Falls. I took this in the spring & forgot to post it. Leica WATE.
#2 Another from my obsessive study of old spruces in various lighting. Leica lux-M 50.
#3 Fruit of Maianthemum dilatatum. CV 125 f/2.5 APO.
I should be back in 2-3 months, hopefully with mushroom & landscape images. Thanks again, all!
Keep 'em coming...it's a real pleasure to view your images, and I'll still be doing that.

These are interesting observations Dale.
There is no question that the Canon 16-35/4 is a long big lens - nothing stealthy about it at all. (It's not that heavy - just big & long relative to the Sony body.)
Can you show us a picture of the WATE on your A7r? (Not that I can afford one but it's interesting to consider nevertheless...)

Here is the WATE on an A7r along with a Canon FD 20mm for comparison since I no longer have the 16-35 EF. This shot was taken with an A7s and the 90mm Elmarit
The Wate is the wide angle solution on the A7 bodies. From what i have seen it performs very well even in the corners with no color cast. And the size is amazing for what you are getting.Well done Leica!

I have been told that there is color cast with the WATE. Could owners of the lens confirm it?

I just walked out the door and with A7r and took a shot of the sky at F/4 at infinity at the widest 16mm setting. I think this would be worst case. It certainly would be worse case with my CV 15. The first shot is just the Adobe raw import. the second shot is a virtual copy with lens vignetting adjusted and purple hue knocked down a bit. In actual practice, I might ignore these adjustments if I Iiked the look.
