I don't do much Astrophotography, but sitting on the beach for a couple of hours was a pleasant way to spend the evening, and I'm pleasantly surprised at the results. Taken at ISO 640 and pushed about 1.5 stops.

One of the images captured in sequence of a mid-air food transfer from peregrine falcon mom to one of her chicks - cross posted in the GM 600mm thread in the Sony forum, BTW.

Birdie, haha, I like it! And why did you then ? Great first images!

I am re-arranging my files.... again and I came across a few that I just worked on. And this one is from about 2 months into using my first Sony FF camera, the classic A7r. With plenty of shortcomings, such as shutter vibration/shock, etc., the files from that camera are gorgeous. And yes, that was captured using my first native lens.

Excellent shots of the hummers, Roberta. Which "focus area" mode did you use for these? I have the same setup, I use "tracking/flexible spot" for hummers with flowers/plants in the background, the A9 sometimes loses the birds when they move away from the feeder. My keeper rate is probably 50/50.

Here is one from this morning.

Douglas, lovely shot of that beautiful male !

I was playing with the focus area and found that Large Spot (not tracking) gave me the most keepers for the hummers and bees . Small and Medium spot ( non tracking) seemed to grab a leaf if it was in front of the hummer. I tried Large Spot Tracking , Flexispot Tracking and Zone Tracking, but as you said it would grab the foliage . I also played around with the AF tracking sensitivity - I found that setting it to 2 did better for me than a setting of 1 if the hummer was flying around foliage or really close to leaves , or flowers .

I have to practice a bit more to keep the bird in the viewfinder . Still trying to figure out what settings work best .

Always open to suggestions.

Birdie

Thanks for the reply, Roberta! I think zone tracking only works better when the background is clean. I will try your setting next time. The hummers are usually 6-7' from my window. I shoot through the window glass.

Nicely done for shooting through the window. While you sit in your comfortable home, I am sitting in the heat in my garden
