The small figure in the face plate opening is a representation of the hierarch whose remains were buried inside, centuries ago. All their yesterdays are very important to Tibetans, they still celebrate a host of culture heroes from a millennium ago.
The zig-zags in the centre of this image are the fresh switchbacks done the week before. There is another set beyond here. They lead to a 5000m pass, the Sengge La, in Central Zanskar. There is absolutely no protection on this narrow, roughly bulldozed proto-road. The vehicle swayed ominously as it crossed snow-damaged sections on the 45 degree slope of small aggregate scree. The driver had to back up and have another bite at each corner, with me looking into the abyss, telling him when to stop in the soft soil pushed off by the earthmovers. It's easy to remember the rugged ones.
