Thanks to a recent relaxation of restrictions, photography inside this 13th century monastery's assembly halls is now permitted, for a hefty fee. I use the material in self-published books so it's worth it to me. This hall and its contents were built with Mongol money - the ruler of the empire at that time was Kublai Khan. He lavished his Tibetan viceroys with virtually unlimited funds. A deal was done to ensure it survived the Cultural Revolution.
