Here is shot with the 1.4 TC (my second one) shot at 528 mm with 100-400.
I think i posted that shot before, here just to show the no vignetting.
With my first converter i had to crop the shots a lot to get rid of the vignetting it was extremly in the corners with no way to remove it in post.
I had both converters next to each others an you could clearly see the removing of the ring. The ring is quite small but it made all the difference.
Thanks for the sample, Werner. Was your camera's lens compensation/shading on or off? If the ring is the culprit, I wonder why Sony didn't issue a recall.
Usually i have lens compensation on, so i think it was on on this one too.
With the first converter LC did not help at all. I am quite sure, that the ring is the culprit, the newer converter works really with no problems.
I know people here in Germany, that got their converter exchanged or fixed by Sony's service.
Sony is sometimes strange
I recommend people with the vignetting problem to ask Sony service. The 1.4 TC is officially supported with the 100-400 GM.

A7R3 100-400mm with 2X TC on the dragon fly. The animal eye auto focus did try to lock on the dragon fly, but was not able to . Loosing PDAF with the 2XTC really slowed down autofocus on the A7R3.
A7R3 100-400mm with 1.4TC on the hummingbird
Thanks for looking,

These are super nice and sharp, Roberta. Here is my humble contribution. No fast AF was required. They are so cute before they become pests.

Werner - I'm on my 4th replacement and all have the same vignetting problem. Right now I'm on hold with Sony US who say that TCs with the last 4 digits of the serial number over 5K are fine - I had to disagree having received 4 with >5K.
So maybe the ones with rings removed haven't made it to North America yet.
I was prepared to live with it but after your info I decided to call them again. Someone higher up the ladder is to call me sometime tomorrow
Cheers

Jim, you’re making me want to get the Zeiss ZE collection of lenses all over again. Looks great!
Thanks so much David!
I'm glad to re-ignite your interest!
I know why these Zeiss lenses have lost a lot of their allure with the introduction of smaller, lighter (Loxia, VC) models, and some optical improvements in more modern lenses, such as auto magnification when focusing and better lens corrections. Despite those factors, these lenses are, IMO, only one small step removed from the current top quality lenses, and at a very affordable price.
I'm keeping my eye out for a few other ZE lenses if they turn up at attractive prices, partly out of pride of ownership and collector interest, but mostly for their imaging and robust build quality.
It's pretty hard to go wrong with any lens that is Zeiss manufactured. Same goes for Sony's GM and Canon's L lenses. Even Sigma Art.
We live in a great time for affordable, high quality photography gear.
