Nice Chuck,
Just curious what day that was. We were going to try and get a sunset there Wednesday night, but we had to go to a dinner party and ran out of time!
I always wonder what time they close the exit gate and if you can get out after the gate is closed.

Wow it was actually Wednesday night. I was on the Black Point Drive from about 2:30 pm until just after sunset. No problem getting out of the park after sunset. Just drove out no gate or anything to stop you.

Oh,Thou !

Silesian,beautiful, modest, gothic,"brick" village churches!

You are the reminders of what was the best in our common great,European history in my homeland/vatherland/heimatland.

You are the very witnesses of the beautiful old, diverse culture of this amazing, little country.

Very often I set off early in the morning,so that I could visit at least one of you on my path before I get to work.

Wow! What a huge trove of amazing images. I hope I'm not overdoing my appreciation for all your great work, and sorry if I overlooked anyone. Very inspiring couple of pages!

First for compilations or multiple shots:
Bob -- Love the Brussels shots. I know now that when we don't see you post for a week, great images are in the pipeline from parts unknown!
Helena -- Another great "study" of the train station and people.
Douglas -- Great "frozen lands" compilation of shots. Such nice compositions.
Samuli -- Nice change up to the super-sharp lake scenes with violet dusk tinge.
Peire -- Still the reigning king of color and quantity. Thanks for your generous notes on the lenses used.
Falcdragon -- More great NZ beach and sunsets!
Alfredo -- You must love and trust your son very much!

Other singular (or couple shots) of outstanding merit:
Chuck -- Amazing setting sun in Florida.
fplstudio -- Terrific Rome shots!
Rioni -- Great streat art (had to do a double take!) and the some of the best of that church.
Kevin -- Nice lighting on your patient visiting daughter.
Aztalon -- Great Yosemite shot of cloudy El Capitan -- nice color.
Therealthing -- Fantastic Yosemite Valley entrance pano at dusk!
Werner -- One of your best Venice shots.
Bastian -- Amazing view of the cloud-filled valley from high above.
Bluloo -- Great detail shots of abstract design elements. Great compositions.
Maestrofilms -- Graceful flowers.
Itsed65 -- Great bobcat capture.
Cheekss69 -- Nice water shots around Manhattan.
Genji -- Your constant documentation of ennui!
Joshua -- If you can take amazing shots of all those birds -- surely, sports are a snap for you!

Seriously, that was a tremendous amount of versatile work! (I'm promising not to do this every time I get on the site! ).

Per earlier conversation, I took out the humble Canon 40/2.8 STM, along with 35/1.4L and 50/1.2L, just to see how they compared (knowing they have different strengths and weaknesses, or charm and eccentricities). Seeing Helena's shot through dirty window, I decided that would be my first 3-way comparison.

Thought this would be interesting with all the new enthusiasm for the 40mm focal length, seeing it against the old standbys. I'm trying to decide if I need or want any 40mm in my collection. Keep in mind that I own not only this fine 35L, but also the Loxia 35 and the Zeiss ZE 35/2 (and selling the Zeiss ZF.2 35/2!).

The 40 STM seems to have the worst flare control -- flare control is something I prize, shooting into high contrast angles as I'm prone to do.

Hand-held slow shutter shots, pressed against dirty glass. PP done individually, including reducing haze from window on right side of frame -- not exactly same effects on color or exposure -- not a "scientific" test.

I found one forgotten (I never even viewed these after the shoot ) directory of photos from 2018 winter/spring. These remind me how nice lens Sony 85GM really is; boke shots with snow turn to magenta/green mess with most of tele lenses due to boke-CA (or whatever you call it), but I did not find it bothering me in any of these shots (there was 182 RAW-files in this directory, not just the ones I processed).

Also boke quality & smoothness with 85GM is most often as good as one could wish for, only in some rare cases DOF -> boke transfer zone has small fuzziness. After initial tests I have never shoot this lens with f/1.4 or f/1.6 (they suck technically, most likely very suitable to portraits like "Leica-glow"), only apertures starting from f/1.7. So I don't have much experience of the two widest apertures, but boke quality has more issues on those settings as well. Also closed down boke quality is exceptional; boke remains smooth and calm, partly because of 11-blade rounded aperture, partly due to optical design.

Sharpness closed to optimal apertures f/2.8-5.6 is excellent as well. Thou that does not make lens great, basically any high quality short tele prime from last 40 years is sharp enough for current sensors.

In my point of view biggest issue with 85GM rendering style is that it has too much contrast in boke. It's still pretty good, nowhere near as bad as FE55 for example, but I compare to lenses I love to shoot with (e.g. Zeiss G, C/Y, ZE/ZF or ZM lenses). To mitigate this issue while shooting I sometimes use reflector to shine more light to subject so I can underexpose background. This can be mitigated also in post processing by adding curves S-curve only to subject (requires manually painting layers = slow & not possible with all subjects). Third mitigation is environment; foggy air makes subject usually stand out from background because there is less fog between subject vs. background boke. Mentioned post processing technique is used on most of my 85GM photos, so that the lens can keep up with my Zeiss lenses.

And second biggest rendering style issue for me is that images without sidelight tend to render subjects very flat compared to Zeiss G, C/Y, ZE/ZF or ZM lenses. This second issue is harder to mitigate, silver reflector adding side light can help with this one too, but when cloud layer is thick reflector can't help, and then photos just remain flat (while my Zeiss lenses render lovely w/ clouds & overcast). I don't find any post processing technique to be able to turn flat 2d image lifelike non-flat image with shape&volume. For this reason I don't particularly like landscape photos from this lens, instead prefer Zeiss Loxia 85 etc. lenses with less flat rendering style.

In nice side light subjects render to non-flat (not "cardboard on top of boke"-style), rendering of shape&volume is not Zeiss level but good - Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/5.6, 1/400s, Sony A7 mkII @ ISO 100

Same subject, but opening up to f/1.7 does not make focus plane rendering any worse, still looks like round tree, not "cardboard on top of boke", but boke is naturally just blur without any recognizable shapes due to f/1.7 - Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.7, 1/3200s, Sony A7 mkII @ ISO 100

Focus plane sharpness f/2.8 is excellent, also boke is very controlled without any boke-CA etc. issues - Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/2.8, 1/3200s, Sony A7 mkII @ ISO 100

Without specific sidelight subjects mostly look flat. I tried to find example which is not totally flat looking, I can see some shape & volume but not full roundness of the tree on this photo where subject was in shade, but lit by reflection from snow (notice also boke smoothness and calmness + softness of boke highlights) - Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/4.0, 1/800s, Sony A7 mkII @ ISO 100

Subject is super sharp even on close-ups. And super flat without specific side light... (notice boke is little harsh on top of the image, this kind of fuzziness is about worst you can expect from this lens) - Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/4.0, 1/1250s, Sony A7 mkII @ ISO 100

My favourite aperture is f/1.7, focus plane is very good and boke quality is very high and naturally @ f/1.7 boke quantity makes everything even smoother - Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.7, 1/5000s, Sony A7 mkII @ ISO 100

Great times, we are currently having so many super good short modern tele lenses for Sony to choose from: Sony 85GM, Zeiss Loxia 85, Leica APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2, Canon 85mm f/1.4 L, Sigma Art 85mm f/1.4, Zeiss Milvus 1.4/85 and Zeiss Otus 85. And then top of these all the older glass...

Thanks for your feedback, Douglas and Chuck.

I agree with Douglas that it isn't only the subject, but the nature of the lens and that grimy window pane I shot through that brings out that feeling of authentic period around the 1930s publishing. Thanks to Helena for the inspiration to scout for such a setting.

I was just reviewing some past pages, and I'm sorry to say I missed acknowledging so many great architectural shots on page 1064: Ronny, Toshiro, Kia, Orso, Manuel, Picture This, Kimknapp, and even Medicine Man's arch is sort of elegant natural architecture.

***********************

After looking through some more of the images from my recent session, I put the 40 STM on hold temporarily due to its flare issue, as well as some CA and vignetting at f/2.8. It fares very well without a bright light source shining into the lens and at smaller apertures, it has very good color and minimal aberrations. And for about $100 used, well, it's an amazing lens! But I'll leave it off for now.

Again, somewhat inspired by Helena (and numerous others, such as Samuli), I wanted to look at the wide open shots I took with the 35/1.4L and 50/1.2L. I was very pleased with what I found, and despite my bias toward 35mm, I tried to keep an open mind as to rendering and aberrations. Echoing somewhat what Douglas said, sometimes the aberrations can provide a timeless or ancient overall feeling to the images which goes beyond obvious imaging flaws. I think I proved this well enough to myself with this comparison done at full aperture. (Not my normal way of shooting, as I'm sure many know, although not completely foreign.)

My overall impression is that of the three lenses, the 35L is the most practical for my use, and has the least objectionable CA and flare wide open. The 50L comes in close second and has additional spherical aberration dreaminess.

All images processed in LR -- these are not straight out of camera, but no gimmicks like added vignetting.

Why is that? I was there during the Shutdown, no problem at all. Even a bonus, no entrance fee. Hotels and campings all operate normally.

Good to hear you had no problems. From what I've heard, many Parks (if they are open) have been suffering issues related to things like waste management, overflowing toilets, lack of services etc. I suppose coming all the way from Australia I'd rather not be rolling the dice as to whether I could even get in I seem to recall during a previous shutdown (2013 maybe?) most Nat Parks were forced to close.

From the Wikipedia entry for Red shirt (photography):
"The red shirt school of photography is a trend which first became popular in the 1950s. It was pioneered by National Geographic photographers, who had subjects wear, or chose subjects who wore overly colorful clothes (not necessarily of red, though red was preferred as it rendered best on Kodachrome film)... As color photography became popular and commonplace, color frequently became an important criterion while choosing subjects to photograph, or for selecting from previously photographed images. Photographers would thus not only choose colorful scenes, but put colorfully costumed people in them."
