Tree was pretty big so had to be farther from it which means the apodization filter has less effect. Some like its effect, some don't. Which bokeh here do you like better? First is GM 85 at 1.8, second is STF 100:
First outing with the 24-105. Seems nice - there's a tad vignette w/ the hood on at 24mm. It's also relatively big/heavy for me (used to RF lenses mostly). But, it'll be good for family stuff I'm pretty sure.

On a image like this where there just is focus plane and blurred background I might even prefer GM 85; the STF 100 looks somehow unnatural on that background. I can see how STF could look great when your background is simple e.g. beach, sea and sky as STF would make the background very simple/abstract, but still somehow recognizeable.
If I would have STF I would be looking for backgrounds, which look like they belong to subject/support the composition, as very easily one gets this look where subject looks like glued on top of some other background. It would be also interesting to see how apodization filter softens transition zone.
Was out doing some lens testing this morning. Am really impressed with the Batis 135. It is really well corrected and sharp. Anyway, the hummers had found the feeder and I thought I would try a quick grab shot. This is a HEAVY crop with the 135, but it is sharp right to 100%. Obviously, not ideal having to crop so heavily, but what the heck....
