An image from back in the spring I never got around to processing. I have other angles of this shot but liked this one too. This is Hollow Rock on Lake Superior near the Canadian border.
Gorgeous, ethereal, otherworldly! Looking at this image feels like entering a fantasy world. Just wonderful!

Cheers!
These are fantastic. On a side note, I don't see too many people using the Rok 20 1.8. Do you like it? Have any other astro or landscape shots to share?
Living in a house facing due east has it's advantages. I witness the sun rising just about every morning and some of them are spectacular. This morning as I ventured out to get the newspapers (yes I still read paper versions occasionally) I witnessed one of the most intense sunrises I've seen in this house over the last 15 years.
A few shots from last week. This little cedar swamp sits on a piece of property I've been thinking about buying. These were shot mid-day, but I imagine I'd be out there every morning shooting, especially cool fall days when this would fill with mist...

Thanks for the explanation, Philippe. I guess that explains why this lens is so readily available and at such a low price. If it had been a better lens, I would have been willing to give it a try, but I think I'll continue looking for a reasonably priced 180 3.4 instead.
My experience with Sonnar 180/2.8 C/Y,both AE and MM is very positive on the A7 series cameras.I actually regard it one of the best lenses from the Zeiss C/Y lineup.
Shows some fringing wide open and sometimes at f4,but those are easily removable.Sharp wide open, where necessary, very sharp from f5.6-8 across the frame at any distance, especially medium and infinity.Very good to excellent microcontrast and vibrant colours stopped down a little.Zeissy (3D) when used properly.I rate it slightly higher than both 200/3.5 and 200/4 Tele-Tessars and 135/2.8 Sonnar.
A7+Sonnar 180/2.8 C/Y AE at f2.8
A7R+Sonnar 180/2.8 C/Y AE at f2.8
A7R+Sonnar 180/2.8 C/Y AE at f11
I have the Apo-Telyt R 180/3.4 too and think it better than the Sonnar, but only by a little margin.Just.

Joshua, please tell me what I need to do to get shipwrecked just like thse girls....
Philippe, getting shipwrecked LIKE these girls would not be....well, "enjoyable", for lack of a better word. But getting shipwrecked WITH them would be a completely different story .
Hi all...been a week or so. This thread moves so fast. I will go back and offer up likes as well to ALL the super grabs.
I've been shooting a little just not posting...so here's another grab from our recent Kauai trip last month.

Thanks! This was the first time I've used the Rok 20. I scored a great deal on it a while back and figured I'd give it a shot but the weather here has been abysmal all summer and when it's been OK I've been busy so I haven't had a chance to test it out at all. I can say from the shoot last week that wide open it's acceptably sharp but does have what I now consider the inevitable fast, wide lens coma/bats wing issue in the corners and along the edges to some extent. No better or worse than any other fast lens faster than f/2.8 shot wide open really. It's comparable to my sigma 20 f/1.4 when the Sigma is shot at f/1.6 or so. The Sigma may be better at f/1.8 but I haven't done a side by side. I tried a Nikon 20 f/1.8 and it seems similar to that as well. Of course, copy variation with Roks may make a difference for better or worse. One aspect of the lens that was a pleasant surprise is that my copy at least is dead on focused for infinity when the focus ring is turned to full stop. That makes things very easy... All-in-all, I'd say it's worth the $ if you can get one on sale. It is nice to use a native mount lens for this stuff. I plan on doing some tests and side-by-sides but it'll have to wait for some very rare clear skies :-)
Enjoying Loxia 85 very much, for my use it could not get much better as all lenses are compromises. Boke is quite nervous/busy wide open at close distances, but closed down f/2.8 it's usually pretty good. So I'll just shoot this lens f/2.8 or smaller apertures - also closing down to f/2.8 improves contrast on focus plane, so nothing to lose.
On larger distances (e.g. 4th photo below) there is little nervousness on corners (top corners on the 4th photo), which doesn't really go away by closing down more - so I'll just need to be careful with my compositions. For larger distance boke shots GM85 and ZE/ZF-series APO-Sonnar 2/135 are of course better choices, but not very likely that I carry them to longer hikes with me.
On focus plane I just love how lens renders textures; rough or smooth, reality is rendered nicely to the sensor.

Really nice BW, how you got the leaves so black? Was the original plant green? [I'm usually not at all liking BW for nature photos]

Thank you. The color of the leaves is a dark green, so it is possible to make them darker in bw in contrast to the red fruids.
