I agree with you, Samuli. FE 85 GM has a basic rendering which is too flat for my taste. But with some work in PP, it is possible to improve on this somewhat. Not in all configurations, but in quite a few IMHO.
Philippe, I noticed that when shooting subjects with homegenous texture it helps for the GM85 flatness. Unfortunately does not help me, as I usually shoot trees, rocks etc. which have more erratic texture than homegenous. Hard to explain with text, so I'll include photo I took on weekend. It was rainy/unstable weather and I wanted to shoot so I visited a car museum. Their main area theme was "the emergency vehicles", and fire hose texture did produce non-flat (to my eye) image from GM85 against my expectations:
Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.7, 1/100s, A7mkII @ ISO 500
And why not to show rest of the firetruck. I wanted to see how much the onion pattern in boke highlights with FE1.4/35 actually bothers me. And it does not bother me. Also in real life shooting I very rarely get so large boke highlights, that the onion pattern would even show. I'm happy to FE1.4/35 rendering style, almost as good as ZM 2/35. GM85 performed nice but photos lack something and photos appear flat - technically very nice, e.g. boke highlights are almost perfect = uniform lightness over whole highlight, no bright edges => this makes boke very smooth looking.

One more shot from Elysian Park, overlooking downtown LA and Dodger stadium.
This was probably my favorite of the series as it had gotten dark enough for the skyline to light up.
7 shot pano. FE 70-200/4 OSS.
Unfortunately, the size limitations on FM don't do this 22,000 pixel photo justice...
Old Pentacon Auto 100/2.8 in m42 mount, single coated, vintage GDR optics.Great, sharp lens, which excells in muted light. This time I used it to take pictures just after violent storm with intense rainfall.
A couple of full moon shots taken this weekend on the beach at Virginia Beach. First just as the colors from the sunset was fading and the second later after the sun was down for awhile. Shot with A6500 at 400mm with 1.4 teleconverter focal length of 840mm.
Cross post 100-400 test thread and FE Image Thread.

Jonathon, the second image reminds me of several images I got from trying to track flying owls .
