I'm currently in Zhejiang province visiting some of the very few remaining ancient villages with traditional housing. They attract a few tourists and the locals try to supplement their meagre income by selling tea, dried Turnip, and dried strips of Yam.
This wonderful, though poverty-stricken, old lady invited me into her dilapidated home and I spent 30 mins drinking green tea and snacking on dried sweet potatoe whilst listening to her talk of her absent family. When I left I gave her the equivalent of US$3, after a bit of a battle to press it upon her. I guess this is more than most people give because she was very happy, gave me a hug and insisted on then giving me a large bag of dried yam and a large bag of tea (which I refused as I thought it too much).
