Out with manual lenses again.
If I am honest, it is much more enjoyable for me to shot these lenses, than the SEL2470Z.

For me it's more like: Push magnification button twice (C1), focus, press shutter release half way to return to full view, compose, shoot!

That's how I shoot with the Leica M9 (without magnification of course ) and with the A7 in AF mode (using the small spot point).

If I need to move the magnification box, I must be on tripod.

That's indeed a faster alternative if you don't mind to focus and recompose.

No serisouly, if I want to do a short DOF image fairly close at F/1.8 - I never (or rarely) want the subject be in the center. So what do I need to do?

- MF ring is swampy so it cant be used like the one on e.g. the CV35/1.2II where I use peeking to set focus where I want quickly. It takes too long to move the focus area (/point) if I use centerpoint.
- If I use some kind of AF area focus will not be exactly where I want it. Fine-tuning is

Not exactly focusing were I want is also a problem I sometimes have with my RX1. Maybe it's even more annoying with that camera because it has larger AF boxes than the A7.
What you say about the focus peaking is exactly what I mean. For landscapes zooming in is no problem at all, but when you do some faster paced shooting with fast lenses it slows you down. I think it's nicer to always see the whole scene when shooting that way. Like the Canon OVF+EG-S or any camera when using an AF lens.

I've had experiences with focus peaking similar to Edward. With some lenses it's easier than others, but wide fast lenses like the CV 35/1.2 and ZF 35/1.4 I miss focus by a couple inches more often than not if I don't magnify. It's the nature of contrast detect being used for the peaking algorithm. I still feel like Ricoh nailed it with the GXR and the high-pass monochrome "predator" mode for use without magnification.

I wish that there was a mode to pick a bank of 4-6 commonly used spots off center for the magnification window, that could be toggled or rapidly scrolled through with a dial, similar to an SLR. I like to shift from portrait to landscape all the time when shooting people and like to keep my subject off center, and it would be nice to not go through the rather arduous process of moving the window around each time.

Focus/compose works well and fast in such situations:

The concentric circles are still visible, even though the sky part is so tiny.

Thank you Dennis!

I am using ACR which also has different profiles that emulate the different picture styles in the camera and IDC.

I never liked adobe standard profile for Sony files, but the camera standard and vivid produce very nice results.

A nice morning in Monterey, love coming here!
All taken with A7R + Leica R 19mm f2.8 II. No crop on any of those
Processed on my Macbook Air, so might be a little off.

Thank you guys!
We always stay at Intercontinental Monterey, next door from the Aquarium.
Ask for an ocean front suite and you will get that little balcony which is my shooting
location every time I'm here. 4th floor is the best

Good, but a few things drive me nuts.
The worst is "unable to zoom in" or something like that in the playback mode.
Happens very often. Sony, fix this please!

Happens to me too. I think the A7 has a chimping detector and when you do it too often it blocks your chimping so that you can concentrate on your photography
